It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Zulema G. Rivera, an extraordinary woman who filled our lives with warmth, joy, and a vibrant spirit. Zulema left this world on May 5th, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, marking the end of a beautiful chapter that began on November 29th, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas.
Born to Ysmael and Delia Garcia Garza, Zulema was a beacon of love and laughter from the very start. She grew up in a home filled with warmth and tradition, values that she carried forward throughout her life. A proud graduate of Edgewood High School, Zulema's early years were marked by her radiance and charm, qualities that shone brightly when she participated in beauty contests around San Antonio.
Zulema's heart found its perfect match when she met Ernest Rivera at a Latin dance event, a chance meeting that blossomed into a lifelong partnership. They married on November 21st, 1965, embarking on a journey filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Nadia and Mario, who were the center of their universe.
Professionally, Zulema had a distinguished career in hospitality at the El Tropicana Hotel and the St. Anthony Hotel, where her flair for decorating and creating exquisite banquets was truly unmatched. Her colleagues admired her dedication, and her infectious enthusiasm made any event she organized a memorable experience.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Zulema was a woman of many passions. Her love for decorating extended to her home, where she would host lavish holiday parties that brought together family and friends. Zulema had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, her home a sanctuary of comfort and love. Her other joys included cooking delectable meals, playing spirited games of Mexican train with her family, tending to her cherished garden of beautiful flowers, and dancing the night away.
Zulema was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ernest Rivera, and her parents, Ysmael and Delia. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her children, Nadia and Mario, and Mario's spouse, Veronica. Her three precious grandchildren, Emilia, Viviene, and Katherine, will forever hold her memory close. Zulema also leaves her sisters, Sylvia Peters and Beatrice Cohen, along with many nieces and nephews who adored her.
Known for her quick wit and jovial personality, Zulema had an innate ability to bring joy to those around her. Her laughter was infectious, and her smile could light up the darkest room. She had a unique talent for making everyone feel special, a testament to her generous spirit and open heart.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurses and caretakers, Richard Williams and Riccy Garcia, whose devotion and love were an integral part of Zulema's care during her final journey.
A celebration of Zulema's life will be held on June 15th, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Hillcrest Funeral Home, located at 1281 Bandera Rd, San Antonio, TX 78229. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life of a woman who touched so many hearts.
