Zelma Mae Cochran

August 27, 1934 — June 7, 2026

Zelma Mae Cochran, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on August 27, 1934, in Lenore, Kansas, Zelma was the cherished daughter of Rayfield and Alice Long. Her life was an inspiring journey of love and devotion, marked by a profound dedication to family and community. In a small and intimate ceremony in Bedford, Iowa, Zelma married the love of her life, Walter Grant Cochran, on June 5, 1954. Together, they built a life filled with laughter and love, raising two wonderful children. Although Walter and their son Allen have preceded her in death, Zelma's legacy continues to shine brightly through her surviving family members. Zelma is survived by her devoted daughter Becky McElrath and her husband Ron, as well as her cherished daughter-in-law Cheryl Cochran. Her grandchildren, whom she adored, include Jason (Angela), Kenneth (Shannon), Heather Impastato (Marc), Erin Hogrefe (Joe), and Ashley McElrath. Zelma was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren, whose visits always brought her immense joy and a twinkle to her eye. For many years, Zelma was the heart of the family business, serving as the office manager for her husband’s plumbing enterprise. Her strong work ethic and attention to detail were matched only by her warm, welcoming smile that greeted every customer. Zelma was a woman of vibrant spirit and endless energy. She found great joy in growing flowers and tending to her yard, often inviting neighbors to share in the beauty she nurtured. Her outgoing and friendly nature made her a beloved member of her exercise class, where she formed lasting friendships. Always quick to lend a helping hand, Zelma's generosity and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Atrium Health Hospice & Palliative Care Cabarrus for their compassionate care during Zelma's final days. Their support and kindness brought comfort and peace to Zelma and her loved ones. A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Zelma's life and her enduring spirit. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Zelma's memory consider planting a flower in her name or performing an act of kindness for someone in need, as a tribute to the way she lived her life. Zelma Mae Cochran leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and resilience. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of her family and friends. As we say goodbye, we celebrate the beautiful life she lived and the enduring love she shared with all who knew her.
