February 10, 1990 — December 7, 2018
It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Wynona Cheyenne Shotbothsides, who departed this world on December 7, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 10, 1990, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Wynona's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with love, friendship, and adventure.
Wynona was a beacon of strength and resilience from a young age, overcoming the loss of her father, Terrance, in 2001. At the tender age of 11, she found a new beginning in Calgary, where she met Zachary Oittinen. Their friendship was a sanctuary built on shared grief and a mutual love for space and nature. Together, they embarked on a journey of dreams and discovery, becoming inseparable companions.
At just 13, Wynona became a mother, and she embraced the challenges of teen motherhood with unmatched grace and determination. Her children—Stellaluna, Phoenix, Zephyr, Avaluna, Elio, Orion, and Aurora—were her universe, her guiding stars, and the center of her world. She navigated life's trials with a spirit that was both indomitable and nurturing, ensuring her children were enveloped in love and laughter.
Wynona completed her education at Louise Dean Centre in 2007, a testament to her commitment to bettering herself for her family. That same year, she and Zachary relocated to Crowsnest Pass, where she became a cherished member of the community. As a bartender at the Cosmopolitan Bar and Hotel from 2008 to 2018, Wynona was known for her dark humor and comforting wit. She had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel heard, understood, and, most importantly, smiling.
In 2009, Wynona and Zachary ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing Southern Exposure Property Management and acquiring Crowsnest Pass Taxi Services. Wynona was not just a business owner but a beloved taxi driver, known for her engaging conversations and genuine care for her passengers.
Wynona's love for the outdoors was boundless. She found peace and joy in hiking, camping, fishing, snowshoeing, and skiing. Her passion for animals led her to volunteer at the Crowsnest Pass SPCA, where her compassion and kindness touched countless lives—both human and animal alike.
Her siblings, Sierra, Glynis, Kenyandra, Dominic, and Dakota, were her lifelong confidants, sharing in the joys and challenges that life presented. As a friend, Wynona was unparalleled. Her humor, combined with her ability to offer solace, made her a treasured ally to many.
Though Wynona's physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and resilience—a testament to a life lived to its fullest, even in the face of adversity.
In honoring Wynona's memory, let us remember to "smile while we can" and to hold close those we love, just as she did every day of her life. She leaves behind a family and community forever changed by her presence, her laughter, and her unwavering love.
Wynona will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her light will continue to guide her family and friends, a reminder of the joy and love she brought into their lives.
Rest in peace, dear Wynona. Your journey among the stars has just begun.
