It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Woodrow “Woody” Wooten Jr, who departed this world on June 5, 2026, at the age of 65. Woody passed away peacefully after a short illness, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born on November 18, 1960, Woody entered this world as a special gift to Woodrow Wooten and Gladys Moore Wooten. Though adopted, he was cherished as their own, and he grew up enveloped in the warmth of a loving family. Raised in the tight-knit community of Grifton, Woody’s early years were filled with curiosity and adventure, which laid the foundation for a life rich in learning and exploration.
A proud alumnus of Rose High School, Woody’s passion for knowledge led him to East Carolina University (ECU), where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in History and Political Science. His love for education and sharing knowledge was evident in his career, where he inspired countless students during his tenure as a beloved instructor at ECU. Woody’s classes were more than just lectures; they were an invitation to explore the complexities of the world with a keen, curious mind.
Outside the classroom, Woody found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He spent several years working at a video rental store in Grifton, eventually owning a store in Greenville, where he combined his love for films with his entrepreneurial spirit. His stores were more than just businesses; they were gathering places for film enthusiasts and a testament to Woody’s love for storytelling.
Woody’s heart was as expansive as his interests. Known for his wry sense of humor, he had an uncanny ability to bring laughter and joy to those around him. An ardent animal lover, Woody was never without the companionship of furry friends. At one point, he lovingly cared for 32 dogs, each one a testament to his boundless compassion. He was equally devoted to the stray cats that roamed his backyard, ensuring they were always fed and cared for.
A true collector at heart, Woody had a passion for collectibles, ranging from comic books and action figures to sports memorabilia. His collection was not just a hobby but a celebration of the stories and artistry that brought him joy throughout his life.
Woody is survived by a family that extends beyond bloodlines, including 12 cherished cousins and numerous close friends who became family over the years. His generous spirit, quick wit, and endless kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
As we bid farewell to Woody, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared and the memories we created together. His life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and the simple joys that make life worth living. Woody’s spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire kindness and compassion in all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Woody's memory to the local animal shelter, a cause he held dear to his heart.
Rest in peace, dear Woody. Your laughter, love, and light will be missed, but never forgotten.
