In Loving Memory

Willie Oscar Hancock
April 25, 1939 — October 28, 2026
We gather in remembrance and celebration of the remarkable life of Willie Oscar Hancock, a devoted family man, passionate sports enthusiast, and cherished community member, who left us on October 28, 2026. Born on April 25, 1939, in Mount Holly, North Carolina, Willie was the beloved son of the late Carrie Barnes Hancock and Willie Oscar Hancock Sr.
Willie was a man of many talents and interests, whose vibrant personality left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. After dedicating 32 years of his professional life as a Transformer Engineer at Duke Power, now known as Duke Energy, Willie retired with a legacy of hard work and dedication. Yet, his true passion lay in the world of baseball, where he found joy and fulfillment both on and off the field. His dedication and skill were recognized when he was inducted into the Gaston County Hall of Fame, Class of 2025, a testament to his enduring love for the sport and the community he so dearly cherished.
His zest for life extended beyond his career and sports. With an infectious spirit, Willie was known to light up any room with his lively personality. Whether it was a friendly competition in singing or dancing, or simply sharing a laugh, Willie had an unparalleled ability to bring joy to those around him. A man of faith, he also found solace and happiness singing in the church choir, uplifting the spirits of his fellow congregants with his melodious voice.
Willie's life was richly blessed with family. He is survived by his loving children, Karen Jones, Gerald Hancock, Barrett Hancock, and Tovdon Lampkin, who carry forward his legacy of love and strength. He was the proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, with one more on the way, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Though Willie was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Barbara Hancock Grier and Iris Hancock Johnson, his spirit and memories live on through the family and friends he leaves behind. Each story shared and each memory cherished will keep his presence alive in the hearts of those who loved him.
A service to honor the life of Willie Oscar Hancock will be held on November 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Grier's Funeral Services, located at 115 John McCarroll Ave, Charlotte, NC 28216. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Willie's memory to a charitable organization of your choice.
As we remember Willie, let us carry forward his legacy of love, laughter, and unyielding spirit, forever grateful for the time we were blessed to share with him.
