In loving memory, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Willie Mathis, who passed away on June 7, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on May 10, 1955, in Jacksonville, Florida, Willie was a beacon of warmth, joy, and kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will be cherished forever. Willie's journey began in the heart of Jacksonville, where he was born to Elton and Mary Mathis. His parents instilled in him the values of generosity and compassion that he carried throughout his life. Although Elton and Mary have predeceased him, their spirit lived on in Willie's loving nature and the way he touched the lives of everyone around him. On September 28, 2006, Willie married the love of his life, Toni Mathis. Their union of 25 years was a testament to devotion and partnership. Though their time together started later in life, it was deeply enriched by the joy of their blended family. Willie embraced Toni's daughters, Kela Lindsey and Channing Patterson, as his own, and was a doting grandfather to Lainah and Preston. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he often traveled to visit them, ensuring that every moment spent together was filled with laughter and love. Willie was a man who made the most of his retirement, spending his final days basking in the beauty of Florida's beaches. His love for the sea was only rivaled by his passion for the Florida Gators. As a true fan, he could often be found cheering them on, his spirit infectious and his enthusiasm boundless. Known for his warm, welcoming nature and his ability to light up any room, Willie was truly the life of the party. He had a remarkable gift for hosting and bringing people together, creating memories that will be treasured by all who knew him. His laughter was a melody that resonated with everyone he met, and his kindness was a balm to those in need of comfort. Willie is survived by his beloved wife, Toni Mathis; his brothers, James and Timothy Mathis; his sister, Jackie Pollard; his cherished stepdaughters, Kela Lindsey and Channing Patterson; and his adored grandchildren, Lainah and Preston. Each of them carries a piece of Willie's heart, a testament to the love he gave so freely. A service to honor Willie's remarkable life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, located at 125 W Ashley Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202. Family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched are invited to join in celebrating a life well-lived and a spirit that will forever be remembered. As we say goodbye to Willie, let us hold onto the joy he brought into our lives and the love he shared with the world. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, dear Willie, knowing that you were loved beyond measure and will be deeply missed.
