Willie was born on March 16, 1934, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Rosa Lee Kegler and the late Johnnie Lee King Sr. His journey through life touched countless hearts, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to have known him.
Willie’s early years were spent in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Perry Street High School. Shortly after, he answered the call of duty and served with honor in the United States Air Force during the early 1950s. His courage and commitment to his comrades earned him an honorable discharge, setting a precedent of service and dedication that would define his life.
After completing his military service, Willie moved to Washington, D.C., where fate introduced him to the love of his life, the late Artiff Winston. Their love story began at a local restaurant where Artiff worked as a waitress, and blossomed into a lifelong partnership filled with love and devotion. Together, they built a family and a life rich in love and joy.
Willie was a man of the open road, enjoying a fulfilling career as a truck driver. He transported goods across the East Coast, connecting communities from warehouses to local businesses and restaurants. His work was a testament to his tireless dedication and strong work ethic.
Beyond his professional life, Willie was a man with a zest for life, known for his love of travel and sports. As an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Wizards, he relished the thrill of sporting events. Willie also cherished his visits to Jacksonville, where he would reconnect with family, always stylishly donning his favorite Stacy Adams dress shoes.
A man of wisdom and warmth, Willie was cherished by his friends and family. His keen insight and love for western shows like "How the West Was Won" and "Bat Masterson" painted a vivid picture of a man who appreciated the simpler pleasures of life. He enjoyed sharing stories over a cold beer, a testament to the joy he found in companionship and conversation.
