Willie James Hunter, a beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on August 30, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on March 15, 1949, in Henry County to Leroy and Narcis Hunter, Willie was a man whose life was marked by service, dedication, and love for his family and community.
Willie graduated from Henry County Training School in 1961, setting the stage for a life of commitment and perseverance. He answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. Willie attained the rank of SP4 and was the proud recipient of a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal, reflecting his unwavering dedication and honor.
After his military service, Willie returned to Alabama, where he spent several years working at West Point Stevens in Abbeville. Known for his meticulous nature, Willie was an employee who never left a task unfinished, a testament to his organized and particular character, traits he carried throughout his life.
For over 30 years, Willie was an active and devoted member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he drew immense strength and joy from his church family. It was here that he shared his sense of humor, his warmth, and his love for community, all of which endeared him to those around him.
Outside of his professional and spiritual life, Willie had a passion for classic vehicles, especially his cherished Nova. Sundays were reserved for trips to the Food Giant parking lot, where he would gather with friends and family, sharing laughs, news, and creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Willie is predeceased by his parents, Leroy and Narcis Hunter, his brother Leroy Hunter, and his special friend Beatrice Green. He leaves behind his dear sister, Ruby (Willie) Richards, who cherished his companionship and support. His presence will be missed, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A service to celebrate Willie’s life will be held on September 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, located at 1299 County Rd. 25, Abbeville, AL 36310. The family of Willie James Hunter extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their kindness, support, and presence during this difficult time. Your thoughtful gestures and shared memories have brought comfort, and they are deeply grateful for the love and support shown.
