It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Willie Defoe Winston on May 24, 2026. Willie passed away peacefully at the age of 76, surrounded by the love of family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and unwavering faith.
Born on June 6, 1949, in the charming town of New Kent, Virginia, Willie was the beloved son of the late Clarence Winston Sr. and Beatrice Winston. He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, his brother Clarence Winston Jr., his niece Angela Winston, and his daughter, Latesha Winston. Despite these profound losses, Willie’s spirit remained resilient, and his heart full of love and compassion for those around him.
Willie’s life was a testament to his dedication, not only to his family but to his community. For many years, he was a skilled barber, a trade where he not only perfected the art of grooming but also engaged in the art of listening, offering sage advice, and sharing his infectious laughter with clients who became lifelong friends. In his 70s, Willie embarked on a new chapter, serving as a bus monitor for special education transportation in Henrico County. It was here that his gentle nature and patience shone brightly, as he took great joy in working with children, ensuring their safety and imparting warmth and kindness on their daily journeys.
Outside of his professional life, Willie found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was often seen walking through his neighborhood, guitar in hand, strumming melodies that reflected the rhythm of his soul. A man of deep faith, he found solace and strength in reading scriptures, guiding his every step with wisdom and grace.
Willie's legacy lives on in the hearts of his surviving family: his devoted daughter Tonya Shahid and her husband Rakim Shahid; his son Sayon Winston and daughter-in-law Melissa Winston; and his daughter Metta Bastet. He leaves behind his treasured sisters Antionette Winston, Beatrice Winston, and Veronica Glover, and brothers Anthony Winston, Keith DeVault, and Brenda DeVault. Willie was blessed with nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild, each a testament to the enduring love he cultivated throughout his life. His close friends, John and Jackie Jefrow, held a special place in his heart, sharing countless memories and laughter over the years.
Willie Defoe Winston was a beacon of love and light, touching the lives of everyone he encountered with his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering kindness. As we say goodbye, we hold dear the memories and lessons he imparted, carrying them forward in a world made better by his presence.
