William "Cris" Christopher Lowery, a beloved son, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at Sentara Leigh Hospital on July 31, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 12, 1959, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Cris lived a life filled with love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Cris was the cherished son of William Lowery and the late Janette Archer Turner Lowery. He is survived by his devoted father, his beloved son, Marion Christopher Allen, and his dear siblings, Janette, Janice, Janine, and Jacinta. He also leaves behind a close-knit circle of friends, including Mark, Coach Chochran, Rev. Clay Joyner, and Pricilla, who all held a special place in his heart. A proud graduate of Kempsville High School, Class of 1977, Cris went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Education from Norfolk State University in 1981, thanks to a full athletic scholarship. His career was marked by a 25-year tenure as a dedicated teacher in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, where he inspired countless young minds. After retiring from teaching, Cris worked as an Assistant Manager for Dollar Tree and a sales associate for Albano Cleaners. Cris was an active member of the Saint John's A.M.E. Church in Norfolk, Virginia, and a proud brother of The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. His summers were spent coaching and mentoring the special needs community at Camp Wanna Go Again, a testament to his generous spirit and desire to make a difference. An avid golfer and sports enthusiast, Cris found joy in both playing and watching the games he loved. His quick wit, warm smile, and knack for storytelling endeared him to all, brightening every room he entered. Cris had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued and cherished, embodying kindness and generosity in all aspects of his life. A service to honor and celebrate Cris's remarkable life will be held on August 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's A.M.E. Church, located at 545 East Bute Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23510. Family and friends are invited to come together in remembrance of a man who touched so many lives. The Lowery family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Sentara Leigh Hospital and The Villages on Sentara Way for their exceptional care.
