William was the cherished son of Clarence and Elsie Shimmel. He grew up surrounded by family in York, PA, which laid the foundation for his lifelong love of narrative and history. He served his country with honor in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1967 aboard the USS Essex. As an E-4 Electrician's Mate Petty Officer Third Class, William's skills as an electrician were highly valued, and his service left an indelible mark on him.
In May 1972, William married the love of his life, Sarah Beck, and they shared 34 beautiful years together until her passing. Their union was blessed with a loving family, including their dear children, Brenda Holtzapple and Missy, who along with her husband Brian Snelbaker, continue to honor his legacy. William was a devoted grandfather to 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched with his gentle humor and wisdom.
William was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sarah, his sister Jackie Stambaugh, and his son Robert Shimmel. He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Myers and Sue Sayers, whose bond was a source of strength and joy. His close friends, Marianne and Phil Fincher, held a special place in his heart, offering companionship and laughter through the years.
Professionally, William found fulfillment in his roles as a truck driver for Jedco Paper Corp. in York, PA, a parts delivery driver for W.W. Engine and Supply in Harrisburg, PA, and later as a park maintenance worker at The Harbor Waterfront Resort in Lake Wales, FL. His work ethic and dedication were evident in all he did.
William was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, and the ever-present cigarette that seemed almost like an extension of himself. He was an avid reader with a book never far from reach, and he delighted in sharing stories of his past, enriching the lives of those around him with tales of humor and wisdom.
A service to celebrate William's life will take place on November 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM, at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, located at 250 Chestnut Hill Rd, York, PA 17402.
