In loving memory, we celebrate the life of William Leroy Carter, Sr., a devoted family man, cherished community figure, and beloved friend, who passed peacefully on June 28, 2026, at the age of 95. Born in Washington, DC, on January 26, 1931, William was the treasured son of the late Kathleen B. Carter and William Myron Carter. His life was a testament to love, faith, and dedication. William was a proud graduate of Luther Jackson High School, class of 1955. Following his education, he served with distinction in the United States Army Reserve, where he was honorably discharged on March 31, 1963. His commitment to service and country was the foundation of his life's work, guiding his principles and actions throughout his years. In 1961, William married the love of his life, Helena, on a beautiful spring day, April 9. Together, they shared over 50 years of marriage, a testament to their unwavering love and partnership. Their union was blessed with two children: William (Skip) Carter and Carla Carter. William also cherished his daughter Etta Thompson from a previous marriage. William's legacy continues through his family, including five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored beyond measure. Professionally, William found his calling in the role of a parts specialist at H.B. Lawrence in Camp Washington, Virginia, where he was respected and admired for nearly two decades. After retirement, he joined Helena in running Mama Mia's Daycare, where his gentle spirit and warm smile earned him the affectionate nickname "Dude" among the children. William's kindness and patience left indelible marks on countless young hearts, and his legacy of care and compassion will continue to inspire. Even in his later years, William's dedication to family remained steadfast. He played a pivotal role in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, offering love, wisdom, and strength. His special bond with his great-grandson, Darnell Carter, Jr., affectionately known as "Bubba," was a source of immense joy and fulfillment for him. His faith was a cornerstone of his life. Originally baptized and raised in the Lutheran tradition, William later became an active and faithful member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he worshipped until his health no longer allowed. His devotion to God was matched only by his love for his family, as he lived a life characterized by humility, integrity, and tireless devotion. William's love for his home and community was evident in the care he took maintaining his immaculate yard, a testament to his pride and dedication. Even as his health declined, he continued to supervise the upkeep of his beloved lawn, ensuring it remained a symbol of his life's work and care. William leaves behind his beloved wife, Helena; his children, William (Skip) Carter, Etta Thompson, and Carla Carter; his grandchildren Darnell Carter, Krystina Carter, Brooke Pannel, William Thompson & Eric Thompson, his brother, Walter Carter (Eunice); his sister, Beverly Carter (Butch); and 13 great-grandchildren to carry forward his legacy. As we say goodbye to William Leroy Carter, Sr., we remember a life well-lived, full of love and grace. His legacy of warmth, humility, and unwavering devotion will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
