William Lee Hulslander
February 5, 1963 — September 8, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Lee Hulslander, who departed this world on September 8, 2026, leaving a legacy of love, tenacity, and inspiration. Born on February 5, 1963, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, William was the cherished son of Lee and Marguerite Hulslander.
William's life was marked by a deep love for his family and a relentless spirit that conquered challenges with grace and humor. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Brenda Hulslander, with whom he shared over 30 years of marriage, finding joy in family gatherings, crafts, and their beloved furry companions. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
A proud graduate of Apple Valley Senior High in 1981, William pursued further education at North Carolina State University, where he majored in general education in 1984. He later honed his skills at James Sprunt Community College, graduating in 1993 with a focus on textile merchandising and maintenance. However, his proudest achievement was earning his hockey coaching certificate, a testament to his dedication to the sport and the community he dearly loved.
William served his country with honor in the United States Marine Corps from 1981 to 1985. His service took him around the globe, but it was North Carolina that captured his heart and became his lifelong home.
His career as a repair technician and boiler operator was cut short in 1999 due to an industrial accident that resulted in the loss of his legs. Yet, William's indomitable spirit shone through as he became an advocate for people with disabilities. Discovering sled hockey rekindled his passion for the sport, allowing him to find speed and motion on the ice. Affectionately known as "Wolf" within the hockey community, William spent countless hours coaching youth and playing as part of a team.
William was known for his candid nature and a heart as big as his aspirations. He challenged those around him to reach beyond their perceived limits, embodying the very essence of perseverance.
Survived by his sister Nora Anderson and her husband Dan, nephew Dean Anderson, great-niece Isabella, and great-nephew Cora, William also leaves behind his stepson William Jason Rimmer, Jenn, Gabriel, Brendan and Alex
, his spirit sister Carol Wilson and her family, Stephane Zettlemayer, Elizabeth, Austin, Shane, Summer Bray John Bray. and his extended hockey family. He was a beloved uncle and mentor, always encouraging others to be themselves and pursue their dreams.
In honor of William's life and spirit, the family would appreciate donations made to a charity supporting adaptive sports or veteran services.
A private funeral service will be held in accordance with William's wishes. As a family, we find comfort in the words of Richard Bach, which William cherished: "You have the freedom to be yourself, your true self, here and now, and nothing can stand in your way."
William Lee Hulslander will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his courage, compassion, and unwavering love. His spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
