It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of William Dennis Barnett, who left us peacefully at his home on May 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 19, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, William's journey through life was marked by remarkable dedication, love, and service to others. William was the beloved son of Cecil and Ruth Barnett, and the cherished brother of Audrey, Linda, Lawson, and Joseph. He carried the values instilled in him by his parents and siblings throughout his life, leaving a legacy of kindness and integrity. After completing his education at Normandy High School in 1957, William pursued higher learning at Hiram Scott College, graduating in 1968. His sense of duty and patriotism led him to serve in the United States Army, where he earned the rank of Specialist 5 with the Army Security Agency. His service to his country was a testament to his unwavering commitment to protect and serve. In 1975, William married the love of his life, Rose, on February 21, forging a partnership that would become the cornerstone of his existence. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, raising five wonderful children: Robert, Rachelle, Adam, Rebecca, and Seth. William's devotion to his family was unparalleled; he was a guiding light, a source of wisdom, and a pillar of strength. William's career was as varied as it was impactful. He served as a police officer in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, bringing justice and safety to his community. He later worked as a longshoreman in Portland, Oregon, where his diligence and work ethic were widely admired. Beyond his professional life, William was deeply involved in his community. As a church elder and a member of the board of education at Trinity Lutheran Church and School, he inspired countless individuals with his leadership and compassion. In his younger days, William found solace in the great outdoors, hiking the breathtaking Columbia River Gorge. After retirement, he discovered joy in tending to his garden in Salem, where he cultivated not only plants but also a sense of peace and contentment. William was a man of great stature, both physically and in spirit. His warm smile and infectious laughter could illuminate any room, and his genuine interest in others made everyone he encountered feel valued and heard. His conversations were a testament to his curiosity and zest for life, as he engaged with the world around him with an open heart and mind. Though our hearts ache with his passing, we find solace in the words: "Say not in grief ‘he is no more’ but in thankfulness that he was." William's life was a gift, a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and lessons that will forever resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him. Honoring William's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in William's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting his spirit of giving and service. William Dennis Barnett will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of his wife, children, siblings, and all those he touched throughout his remarkable life. May he rest in peace, knowing that his love and light continue to shine brightly in the lives of those he cherished.
