In Loving Memory

William (Bill) Ludwil
June 22, 1945 — March 19, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of William (Bill) Ludwil on March 19, 2026, after a courageous decade-long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Bill was born on June 22, 1945, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Dorothy Bravinder Ludwil and Eugene Ralph Ludwil. His life was a testament to the values of dedication, love, and perseverance.
Bill spent his formative years in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, graduating from St. Louis Park High School in 1963. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota, laying the foundation for a successful career in the food safety and quality assurance industry.
In 1966, Bill answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Air Force. As an X-Ray Technician, he served with honor at Air Force Bases in California, Taiwan, and Mississippi until 1970. His service was a source of pride, and he carried the discipline and camaraderie of those years into every aspect of his life.
Bill's professional journey led him to work with notable organizations such as George A. Hormel Co., Jerome Foods, Carolina Turkeys, and Schwan's Foods. He concluded his career as Vice President of Food Safety & Quality at Schwan's, leaving a legacy of commitment to excellence and safety.
On April 8, 1967, Bill married the love of his life, Susan Ring. Their marriage, spanning 58 wonderful years, was a beacon of love and partnership. Together, they raised two daughters, Kelly Bates and Jenny Umbarger, instilling in them the same values of kindness and integrity that defined Bill's life. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Andrew Bates, and Elliot and Oliver Umbarger, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was a man of many passions. He had a lifelong love of woodworking, a skill he honed under the guidance of his Uncle Herbie. Bill crafted beautiful pieces, including bookcases and sconces, each a testament to his patience and creativity. An avid car enthusiast, Bill adored his Cadillacs, especially his 1970 Cadillac De Ville. As a member of the Cadillac LaSalle Club, NC Eastern Region, he delighted in attending events like the 2012 Grand National Convention in Florida.
Bill's heart was also at home on the golf course, and he found peace and solace in the natural beauty of the Gunflint Trail and North Woods of northern Minnesota. His love for grilling was legendary, undeterred by the harshest of Minnesota winters.
During his years in Rice Lake, WI, Bill was an active member of the Elks and dedicated time to volunteering with the United Way in Goldsboro, NC. His generosity and commitment to community service were hallmarks of his character.
In this time of remembrance, the family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Soltys Place Adult Day Health, the Durham Center for Senior Life Adult Day Health, the Durham VA Medical Center, Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and Liberty Home Care & Hospice. Their kindness and support were invaluable as Bill's Alzheimer's progressed.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Snow Approach Foundation, Inc. at 129 East King Street, Hillsborough, NC 27278, or online at https://snowapproach.org/donate/, to honor Bill's memory and support Alzheimer's research and care.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate Bill's remarkable life. His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife Susan, his daughters, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege to know him. Bill's spirit of warmth, love, and resilience will continue to inspire those who were touched by his presence.
Rest in peace, dear Bill. Your journey here has ended, but your light will shine on in our hearts forever.
