In Loving Memory

William A. " Bill" Schlaak
June 23, 1949 — September 26, 2026
William A. "Bill" Schlaak, a cherished soul and beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2026, after a brief respite from dialysis. Born on June 23, 1949, Bill was a gentle giant whose life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love.
Bill was the beloved son of Albin and Phyllis (Cossette) Schlaak, who preceded him in death. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Linda (Grovogel) Schlaak, and his loving children, Josh and Chris Henkel, and daughter Eli (Abi) Gonzalez-Rehorst. Bill and Linda's love story began in early September 1984, at a bus stop of Fox Valley Tech, over a shared cherry Lifesaver. Married civilly on January 16, 1988, their bond was further solidified when they were sealed for time and all eternity at the Chicago Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on July 28, 2007. Together, they faced life's challenges as a true team, always by each other's side.
A proud graduate of Wausau High School, Class of 1968, Bill went on to further his education at Fox Valley Technical College from 1984 to 1987. He briefly served in the United States Air Force, where he completed Basic Training. His professional life was marked by his pride in serving as a bus driver for the American Red Cross' Dial-A-Bus program. Bill also worked with Pinkerton Security, Dunham Express, and lastly, Journal Community Publications.
Bill's hobbies reflected his deep love for history and family. He was the family genealogist and historian, delving into the rich tapestry of his family's past. His interests also extended to coin and stamp collecting, pursuits that brought him great joy and fulfillment.
Known for his calm, quiet nature and ever-ready willingness to assist others, Bill was affectionately referred to as a "gentle giant" and a "teddy bear." His presence was a comforting one, and he was greatly respected and loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In memory of Bill, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of choice, honoring his spirit of generosity and kindness. Bill's legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and community.
