Wilhem Robert Van Luyn
April 2, 1952 — May 23, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Wilhem Robert Van Luyn, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left this world peacefully on May 23, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on April 2, 1952, in Brooklyn, New York, Wilhem was the cherished son of Wilhelm Conrad Van Luyn and Edith Rotella Van Luyn, both of whom predeceased him.
Wilhem's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love. He proudly served his country for four years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a commitment that shaped his character and the values he carried throughout his life. After his honorable military service, Wilhem embarked on a remarkable career with the U.S. Sealift Command, dedicating 34 years as a U.S. Merchant Marine Seaman. His work took him across the seas, yet his heart always remained anchored to his family.
Wilhem shared a beautiful life with his devoted wife, Annabelle Van Luyn, who stood by his side through all of life's ebbs and flows. Together, they built a loving family and created a home filled with joy, laughter, and unconditional support. He is survived by his children: Daniel Robles, Marygold Donaldson and her husband Jeff Donaldson, Jackeline Van Luyn, Jack C. Van Luyn, and May Van Luyn. Wilhem's legacy extends to his nine grandchildren, including Kristen Burghauser and Madison, and one precious great-grandchild, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
Wilhem's life was rich with love, characterized by his unwavering devotion to his family and community. He had an indomitable spirit, a kind heart, and a gentle demeanor that endeared him to all who knew him. Whether he was sharing stories of his adventures at sea, offering sage advice, or simply being present for those he loved, Wilhem's warmth and wisdom left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
In his leisure, Wilhem enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, often spending time in nature, where he found peace and inspiration. His love for the ocean was not just part of his career but a personal passion that he shared with those around him.
The family invites all who knew Wilhem to join them in celebrating his life and legacy. A memorial service will be held at a later date, where friends and family can gather to honor his memory and share stories of the incredible man he was.
As we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable soul, we also celebrate the life of Wilhem Robert Van Luyn—a life well-lived, filled with love, service, and enduring impact. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
