Wilburn Eugene "Gene"

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wilburn Eugene "Gene" Rowland, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Gene peacefully departed this life on August 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 11, 1942, in Gainesville, Florida, Gene was the cherished son of the late Wilburn Eugene Rowland Sr., affectionately known as "Jack," and Inez Robbins. Gene's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and love. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1962 to 1966, and he was a Vietnam veteran whose service was marked by honor and courage. After graduating from Gainesville High School in 1960, Gene embarked on a career that showcased his remarkable skills. His proficiency in plumbing and pipefitting was honed through a dedicated apprenticeship, and he later became a skilled welder. Gene played a vital role in the construction of many of Gainesville's iconic structures, including the O'Connell Center, the Seagal Building, North Florida Regional Hospital, and the Florida Farm Bureau Federation. His 60 years of service to the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry (Local 234 Jacksonville, FL) stand as a testament to his commitment and expertise. On September 25, 1976, Gene married the love of his life, Barbara Adams Rowland, in Gainesville. Together, they built a home filled with laughter and love, raising three wonderful children: Clifton Shane, Justin Eugene, and Robin Ashley. Gene was predeceased by his son, Clifton Shane "Catfish" Rowland, and his parents, Jack and Inez. He is survived by his devoted wife Barbara, his children Justin and Robin (Robert), his siblings Charles (Donna) and Linda (Al), and his cherished grandchildren: Justin Joel, Logan Rowland, Sophia Pauline, and Elizabeth June. A man of many talents and passions, Gene was a proud Florida cowboy, working cattle with his trusty horse, Dan. He rode in the rodeo circuit and often quipped, "that'll make an old man outta ya QUICK!" Gene was also a lifelong member of the NRA, a member of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of the State of Florida (Micanopy Lodge 29), and an enthusiastic gardener, hunter, and fisherman, having even once hunted a bear in the Okefenokee Swamp. Gene's quick wit, warm smile, and generous heart touched all who knew him. He was a loyal, honest, and patient man, always ready to lend a hand or share a few poignant words. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on countless lives. A service to honor Gene's extraordinary life will be held on August 25, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Milam Funeral Home, located at 311 S Main St, Gainesville, FL 32601. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the VA hospital for their exceptional care and support over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Gene's memory to a charity of your choice, to honor his legacy of giving and kindness.
