Wesley Samuel Sunderlage

Wesley Samuel Sunderlage, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on January 30, 1948, in Elgin, Illinois, Wes lived a life full of love, adventure, and dedication. Wes was the beloved son of the late Raymond and Dorothy Sunderlage. He was predeceased by his brothers Chuck and Gordon Sunderlage. His memory is carried forward by his devoted wife of 46 years, JoEtta Sunderlage, and their children, Steve (Amy) Sunderlage and Michelle (Dallas) Hansen. A proud grandfather, Wes leaves behind five grandchildren: Alek (Tiffany) Ertman, Gaven (with special friend Elaina Moody), Sylvia (Caleb) Olson, Kasey Hansen, and Lily Hansen. He is also survived by his siblings Wendell, Glen, John, and Paul Sunderlage. In 1968, Wes answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed on the JFK aircraft carrier as a baker, where he became known for his exceptional homemade bread and pies. His service took him across the Mediterranean Sea, visiting numerous countries and creating lifelong memories. After his military service, Wes pursued various jobs, often intertwining his work with his love for duck hunting. His career took a defining turn when he joined Davey Tree Service in 1972, thanks to a chance meeting in a duck blind. By 1977, Wes had founded Sunderlage Tree Service, which he managed until 1993. His passion for the trade was a legacy he proudly passed down to his son and grandson. In 1994, Wes and his family relocated to Hugo, Minnesota, and later to Gillett, Wisconsin, where he continued his esteemed career with Asplundh Tree Experts. Even after retiring in 2007, Wes couldn't resist the call of the trees and soon partnered with his son to start Casey’s Tree Service. He remained actively involved until his 76th year, when JoEtta gently persuaded him to focus on the ground crew. Wes's interests extended beyond his career. He found joy and camaraderie in the Thursday night golf league and cherished the hunting and fishing trips he took with family and friends. Canada fishing trips, duck hunting, and deer hunting were among the many adventures that enriched his life and the lives of those he loved. A celebration of Wes's life will be held on August 29, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Rhodes-Charapata, located at 121 Chicago Street, Oconto, WI 54153. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made to The Finnegan Lake Walleye Club in Gillett or a charity of your choice. The Sunderlage family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Pritzl, Beth Jaeger, and the compassionate nurses from HSHS, as well as the Veterans Association and Amy Thomson from Hospice, for their exceptional care and support during Wes's illness. Wesley Samuel Sunderlage will be remembered as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and worked passionately. His legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know him.
