Wendel B. Koger

January 27, 1963 — August 21, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wendel Koger, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world on August 21, 2026, due to a heart attack. Born on January 27, 1963, in Columbia, South Carolina, Wendel was a beacon of strength, kindness, and laughter to all who knew him. Wendel was the beloved son of Betty Koger and the late Jack Koger. His father, Jack, preceded him in death, leaving behind a legacy of love and family that Wendel carried forward. Wendel was a devoted husband to Basheera Koger Bey, whom he married on June 10, 1986, in New Bern, North Carolina. Their marriage was a testament to love and partnership, filled with cherished moments and unwavering support for one another. Wendel’s proudest accomplishments were his children: daughter Paris Hopkins, and sons Najeeb Bey and Zayn Bey, who were the center of his world. As a grandfather to ten beautiful grandchildren, Wendel's spirit and love will live on through their laughter and joy. A graduate of Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC, Wendel furthered his education at East Carolina University, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He was a proud Marine veteran, dedicating 30 years of service to his country. His commitment to service and country was reflected in his everyday life, as he was always ready to protect and support those he loved. Wendel had an unforgettable personality, marked by warmth, humor, and an innate ability to make everyone feel at ease in his presence. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his dogs, simple pleasures that brought him joy and peace. His generosity and genuine concern for others were evident in the way he lived his life, always ready with a smile, a story, or a helping hand. Friends and family will remember Wendel for his steadfast presence and the love he showed in every moment. His devotion to those he held dear was visible in the small gestures and grand sacrifices he made, ensuring they knew their importance in his life. A celebration of Wendel’s life will be held on September 14, 2026, at 6:00 PM at The Smiths Funeral Home, located at 2527 Statesville Rd, Charlotte, NC 28306. In memory of Wendel, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice, honoring his spirit of giving and kindness.
