Wayne Ernst
March 24, 1936 — March 12, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Wayne Ernst, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who peacefully left this world on March 12, 2026, just shy of his 90th birthday. Wayne was surrounded by the love of his family at his home in Boise, Idaho, as he embarked on his final journey.
Born on March 24, 1936, in the quaint town of Medical Lake, Washington, Wayne was the cherished son of Paul and Ruth Ernst. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Rebecca, stepdaughter Lisa, sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Charlie, and nephew John. Wayne's legacy of love and kindness will forever resonate with his surviving family members: his devoted wife Janie Ernst, children Deb, Doug, Pam Bruce, and stepdaughter Kelly (Dave). He also leaves behind his sister Carolyn and brother-in-law Frank Payne, as well as his adored grandchildren Brenna, J, William, Aislinn, Brandon, Eliza, Jackson, Heidi, and Ella, along with two precious great-granddaughters.
Wayne's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to family and community. He graduated from Caldwell High School in 1956, where he shone on the football and baseball fields, reflecting his early passion for sports. Furthering his education at Boise Junior College, Wayne continued to excel in football under the esteemed guidance of Lyle Smith, contributing to a National Championship team.
Wayne's career journey was as diverse and dynamic as the man himself. After his academic pursuits, he explored various roles, from teaching to delivering for Dairgold, before finding his true calling in commercial construction. Wayne dedicated over 50 years to shaping the landscape of the Northwest, leaving his mark on numerous projects with his skilled hands and visionary mind.
In 1988, Wayne married the love of his life, Janie, in Boise, where they built a home filled with laughter, love, and shared dreams. Together, they cultivated a life enriched by Wayne's passion for the outdoors. An avid lover of nature, Wayne spent his younger years camping, hunting, and fishing in the mountains. As time passed, his love for the land found expression in gardening. Wayne meticulously planned his garden each winter, laying out his visions on graph paper, eagerly anticipating the vibrant blooms of spring.
Wayne was renowned for his quick wit and warm smile, possessing an innate ability to make others feel welcome and cherished. His kindness and generosity were boundless, touching countless lives with his gentle spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will inspire all who were fortunate to know him.
In honor of Wayne's life and his commitment to supporting youth, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Idaho Youth Ranch, an organization close to his heart.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Adria, Torri, and Bonnie with First Choice Hospice for their compassionate care and support during Wayne's final years.
As we bid farewell to Wayne, we remember him not with sorrow but with the enduring joy and love he brought into our lives. His spirit will forever be a guiding light, reminding us of the beauty of life, the importance of family, and the power of kindness. Rest in peace, dear Wayne. Your legacy of love will remain in our hearts forever.
