Wayne A. Jones Sr

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Wayne A. Jones Sr., who departed this world on August 8, 2026, at the age of 67. Wayne was born on July 10, 1959, in the close-knit community of Blanco, Texas, to Emil Jones Jr. and Ernestine Nichols. He was a beacon of warmth and kindness, known for his infectious smile and a heart as big as Texas itself. Wayne's early years were filled with the love of family and a passion for sports. A proud graduate of Highlands High School in 1977, he excelled in athletics, making his mark on the local sports scene and playing baseball for the S.A. Yankees (Blacksox). His love for games extended beyond the field as he became a renowned dominoes champion, a card and basketball pro, and even a Lincoln Park dominoes champ. Wayne's professional journey led him to a dedicated career at Gaylord (International Paper), where he worked for over 35 years. His commitment to service continued when he moved to Georgia, serving as a Head Custodian at Fulton County Schools for over 11 years. Eventually, he returned to his beloved San Antonio, where he continued to make a difference at NEISD School District until his retirement. An active member of Wheatley Heights Baptist Church, Wayne's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He attended services and participated in Wednesday Bible studies, always ready to pray with and for others. His mornings were legendary, as he would joyfully wake the entire household at 6 a.m. with gospel music and the aroma of breakfast. Wayne's life was a testament to love and family. He shared a special bond with his high school sweetheart, Valerie Ladson, with whom he welcomed his daughter, La Toya. Later, he married Yolander Billingsley (Heard) in 1993, and together they raised two wonderful sons, Wayne Jr. and Malcolm. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Zaria Alsbrooks, A'Riah Bussey, and Malani Jones. Wayne's siblings, Douglas Coffee, Carl Jones, and Tyrone Stevens, will deeply miss his presence, as will his many friends and the countless lives he touched with his generosity and humor. Though he is predeceased by his parents, Emil Jones Jr. and Ernestine Nichols, and his siblings, Linda Jones and Madea Coffee, their spirits are undoubtedly united once more. In honoring Wayne's life, a service will be held on September 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Wheatley Heights First Baptist Church, located at 7539 Midcrown Dr, San Antonio, TX 78218. The family extends a heartfelt message: “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.” In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Wayne's memory. His generosity, love, and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
