Wanda Mae Walker
May 18, 1934 — May 3, 2026
It is with heavy hearts yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Wanda Mae Walker, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Wanda departed this world peacefully on Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and dedication that will forever remain etched in our hearts.
Born on May 18, 1934, in the quaint town of Lavonia, Michigan, Wanda was the cherished daughter of Homer E. Coolman and Celestia E. Sheets Coolman. Wanda was one of seven siblings, and she was predeceased by her brothers Don, Dean, and Homer, and sisters Virginia Carmine and Idel Roberts. She is survived by her beloved sister, Ruth Ann Fogel, with whom she shared a lifelong bond.
Wanda's life was forever enriched when she met the love of her life, Richard, affectionately known as Dick. They married on April 21, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, embarking on a journey that would span 59 glorious years. Together, they raised four wonderful sons—David, Dan (Lynn), Scott, and Steve (Donna)—and their family continued to grow with the addition of four grandchildren: Daniel, Austin, Celestia, and Cody, and one cherished great-grandchild, Conor.
In 1975, Wanda and Dick relocated to Mexico Beach, Florida, where they continued their journey together. Wanda was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a successful businesswoman, working alongside Dick in their various business ventures, the last of which was the beloved Dixie Dandy in Port St. Joe, Florida, where they welcomed and served their community for 40 years with warmth and dedication.
A woman of deep faith, Wanda was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Mexico Beach. She served her church family in numerous capacities, including as secretary and choir director, where her love for music and her beautiful voice were often shared. She was also a dedicated member of the Port St. Joe VFW, contributing her time and talents as secretary, treasurer, and a key member of the hospitality committees.
Wanda had a zest for life, which was evident in her many hobbies and interests. She was an avid shell collector, a passionate crafter, and had a special place in her heart for her pets, particularly her miniature schnauzer, Buddy. Together with Dick, she traveled to 48 states, creating cherished memories with family and friends along the way.
Wanda will be remembered for her infectious laughter, her radiant smile, and her ability to bring joy to those around her. She had a remarkable way of turning life's challenges into opportunities for humor, often laughing along with the many "short jokes" made throughout the years.
Wanda's spirit will be celebrated in a memorial service at the United Methodist Church in Mexico Beach, where her beautiful voice once filled the sanctuary. She leaves behind a loving family, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends who were touched by her kindness and warmth. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her, as we carry forward the lessons of love, resilience, and joy that she so gracefully imparted.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the United Methodist Church of Mexico Beach or a local animal shelter in Wanda's name, honoring her love for her community and her cherished pets.
