February 10, 1947 — June 17, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Waltraud "Wallie" Simmons, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who left us peacefully on June 17, 2026, at the age of 79. Wallie was born on February 10, 1947, in Wiesbaden, Germany, to Wilhelm Grūger and Else Hammish, who have preceded her in passing. Wallie's journey through life was one marked by an unyielding spirit, a boundless capacity for love, and an infectious laughter that could light up the darkest room. She was a devoted mother to her cherished children Brenda Lee Burfeind (Steve), Andrew Henkel (Lillee), and Roman Henkel, who will forever hold her memory close in their hearts. Her brother, Dieter Grūger, also survives her, carrying forward their shared memories and family legacy. A woman of extraordinary warmth and kindness, Wallie found joy in the heart of her family, which expanded over the years to include five great-grandchildren, each of whom she adored and doted on. Her home was forever filled with laughter, love, and the delicious aroma of her renowned German cooking, where she would often dream aloud about opening a cozy diner named Oma's Kūche (Grandma's Kitchen). Wallie's professional life was equally impactful. She dedicated many years to providing daycare, where she nurtured countless children, often taking them on vacations as if they were her own. Her children would jokingly say she loved her daycare kids more than them, a testament to the profound connections she formed. Her warmth and charisma extended to her roles at Kmart and Walmart, where she greeted every customer with a smile and a friendly word, looking forward to each interaction as a chance to brighten someone’s day. A creative soul, Wallie had an innate talent for crafting, transforming the ordinary into extraordinary with her skilled hands and imaginative spirit. She was a woman who could make something special out of nothing, leaving behind cherished mementos that will be treasured by those who knew her. Wallie's life was a testament to the power of laughter and love. Her crazy shenanigans and comedic timing could make anyone laugh, ensuring that those around her never had a dull moment. Her legacy is one of joy, creativity, and genuine compassion—a life fully lived and a spirit never to be forgotten. As we say goodbye to Wallie, we celebrate a life that touched so many in immeasurable ways. Her memory will live on in the hearts and smiles of her family, her friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know her. A service to honor Wallie's remarkable life will be held at a later date, where family and friends are invited to share stories, laughter, and love in her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Wallie's generous spirit by sharing a laugh with someone in need of cheer, cooking a dish that brings people together, or crafting something beautiful out of nothing. Rest in peace, dear Wallie, as you join your beloved parents in eternal tranquility. Your laughter will echo in our hearts forever.
