In loving memory of Walter Theodore Person, Sr., a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, who departed this life on April 28, 2026, at the age of 78. Walter was born on April 22, 1948, in the close-knit community of Brown Summit, North Carolina, to the late John "Tappin" Person and Doris Farrar. He bravely battled terminal stomach cancer and congestive heart failure, and he left this world surrounded by his beloved family. Walter's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his work. He was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970. During his military service, Walter was recognized for his exemplary conduct and skill, earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Sharpshooter (M-14 Rifle Award). His roles as a cook and volunteer fireman during his service exemplified his commitment to taking care of others. A man of education and self-betterment, Walter attended public high schools in both Greensboro, NC, and Dorchester, MA, where he laid the foundation for a life of learning and hard work. His career was characterized by his resilience, integrity, and dedication, traits that he passed on to his loving family. On June 16, 1983, Walter married the love of his life, Deara M. Burton. Their union of 45 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a family filled with love, laughter, and strength. Walter's legacy lives on through his children: Valerie Burton, Walter Davis, Walter 2nd, Monique Preston, Attenako Person, Rassunako Person, and his cherished foster sons, Dr. Safari Baron and Jafari Baron. His nine grandchildren—Nijo, Daiquan, Natanne, Trinity, Jaden, Serenity, Jade, Jaxson, Julian, Jesiah—and three great-grandchildren will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. Walter was predeceased by his parents and his beloved sisters, Eva Person, Linda Jones, Esther Garritt, and Deborah Mikal. He is survived by his devoted wife Deara, his siblings Robert Person, Michael Person (and wife Tangy), Barry Person (and wife Velita), Dorothy Williams, and Barbara Truitt (and husband Harold), as well as his sister-in-law Mildred Pitts. Walter was a beloved uncle, cousin, and friend to many who will miss him dearly. Walter was a pillar of strength and a beacon of light to all who knew him. He was a man who embraced life with an open heart and a generous spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a kind word. His warmth, humor, and wisdom will be profoundly missed but never forgotten. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all who have provided support and comfort during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Walter's memory to a charity of your choice. A celebration of Walter's life will be held to honor his memory and the indelible mark he left on all our hearts. Details of the service will be shared with family and friends soon. May his soul rest in eternal peace, knowing he was deeply loved and appreciated.
