It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Walter Page, who departed this world on April 8, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on September 19, 1943, in the close-knit community of Linden, Alabama, Walter was a beacon of warmth and kindness, whose radiant smile and generous spirit touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. Walter was the cherished son of Inge Page McGinnis and was preceded in death by his loving wife, May Page, with whom he shared many beautiful years of marriage. Together, they crafted a life filled with love, laughter, and enduring memories. Walter was also preceded in death by his mother, and his siblings, Larry, Edward, and Otis McGinnis, Julia Reed, and Reverend Eula Smith, all of whom he held close to his heart. A proud 1952 graduate of George P. Austin High School in Linden, Walter embarked on a distinguished career at the Smithsonian Institute, where he served as a K-9 police officer for over 30 years. His dedication to his work was a testament to his character—steadfast, reliable, and compassionate. Walter’s colleagues often spoke of his unwavering commitment and the deep bond he shared with his canine partners. Walter was a devoted member of the Hunter Memorial AME Church, where he found solace and strength in fellowship. Even as his health began to decline, his faith remained a cornerstone of his life. He was an avid dog lover and found immense joy in family gatherings, cookouts, and the occasional visit to the Maryland Live Casino. His love for his family was unparalleled, and his home was always open, offering warmth and welcome to all. Walter is survived by his devoted niece and caregiver, Rachael Smith, who provided unwavering support and love in his final years. He also leaves behind his brother, Willie McGinnis of Birmingham, Alabama, his Aunt Elive Nathan of Linden, Alabama, sister-in-laws Rosie McGinnis and Lucille McGinnis, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will continue to carry his legacy of kindness forward. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Rachael Smith for her compassionate care, and to all who offered their comforting words, calls, and cards during this difficult time. Walter was a beautiful soul who enriched the lives of all who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished. Walter Page’s life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the enduring bonds of family. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, and he will be dearly missed by all. A service to celebrate Walter’s life will be held at Hunter Memorial AME Church, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the local animal shelter, reflecting Walter's deep love for dogs, in his honor.
