Walter McKinley Palmer (CHUCKIE)

July 1, 1954 — March 25, 2026

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Walter McKinley Palmer, affectionately known as "Chuckie," who departed this life on March 25, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on July 1, 1954, in Indianola, Mississippi, Chuckie lived a life filled with love, resilience, and a steadfast dedication to his family and community. The son of the late McKinley and Alma Jean Palmer, Walter's life was shaped by their nurturing love and guidance. Predeceased by his beloved parents, Walter held their memory close as he journeyed through life with unwavering courage and grace. Walter was a devoted husband to the late Mary Johnson, with whom he shared a beautiful life and three wonderful children: Jason, Kimberly, and Krystal. Though he endured the unimaginable heartache of losing his wife and daughters to cancer, Walter's resilience shone brightly, and he continued to be a pillar of strength for his family. Educated at Calumet High School, Walter furthered his studies at Kennedy King College, where he forged friendships and honed skills that would serve him throughout his career. He proudly served his country as a member of the Airforce National Guard, and later, he dedicated his professional life to Greyhound Bus Line and CSX Railroad. His love for music led him to a memorable one-year tour with the Chi-Lites, where he played the drums with passion and flair. Walter's creativity knew no bounds as he captured the world through the lens of his camera, leaving behind a legacy as a great photographer. His adventurous spirit and love for motorcycles found a home in the Harley Davidson Club, where he cherished the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. To those who knew him, Walter was a man of boundless generosity and warmth. His love for his grandchildren was unconditional, always prioritizing their well-being and joy. Despite his own battles with cancer and back surgery, Walter remained steadfastly devoted to his granddaughters, delighting in taking them to the beauty shop, out to dinner, and savoring the simple pleasures of life. Walter's compassion extended beyond his family, as he was always ready to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends. His laughter, wisdom, and unwavering kindness will forever be treasured by his surviving family: his son Jason Allen Palmer; his sister Felicia Michelle Palmer; his grandson Austin Palmer; his aunts Alma Palmer and Mildred P. Brown; Gwendolyn Palmer Ailes (Enoch); and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A service to celebrate Walter’s remarkable life will be held on April 11, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Leaks & Sons Funeral Home, located at 18400 Pulaski Road, Country Club Hills, IL 60478. Friends and family are invited to join us in honoring a life well-lived. The family of Walter McKinley Palmer wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude for the many acts of kindness, prayers, and expressions of love extended to us during this time of bereavement. Your calls, messages, and gestures of support have provided strength and encouragement as we celebrate and honor his remarkable life. In this moment of farewell, we remember Walter not with sorrow, but with the joy and warmth he brought into our lives.
