Born on June 7, 1949, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Walter was the cherished son of Turner Presley and Marion Brooks Pettiford. He grew up in a warm and nurturing household, where he learned the values of love, dedication, and service that he carried throughout his life.
Walter was a man of profound faith and commitment. He was ordained as a deacon at the Greater New Birth Church of Durham, where he served his community with grace and humility. His devotion to his faith was a guiding light in his life and a testament to his character.
In his pursuit of professional excellence, Walter received a certificate of mortuary science from Gupton Jones College in Atlanta, Georgia. This achievement led him to a meaningful career as an embalmer at Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home in Durham, where he worked for over 20 years. His gentle care and compassionate service touched countless lives and brought comfort to many families during their times of need.
Walter's personal passions were as vibrant as his professional life. He had a deep love for music, particularly playing the guitar. He shared his musical talents with the world as part of the group "The Spirit of Four and The Harmonizing Five," where he played the guitar and sang with joy and spirit. In his quieter moments, he found solace in watching old Western movies on his computer, a pastime that brought him great joy.
Walter's legacy is carried on by his loving wife of 38 years, Mary Christine Pettiford, who stood by his side through life's journey. He leaves behind his cherished children: Donna Spencer, with grandchildren Michael, Marcus, Stacey, and Tosha; Yevette Pettiford; and Dana Johnson. Walter's family expanded further with six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored and who brought immense joy to his life.
