July 23, 1954 — May 24, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Walter Lewis Jr., who departed this life on May 24, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on July 23, 1954, in the warm embrace of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Walter was the cherished son of the late Walter and Emma P. Lewis. His journey through life was marked by boundless love, unwavering dedication, and a profound impact on everyone he met. Walter's life was a testament to the strength of family bonds and the power of love. A devoted husband, Walter shared 48 beautiful years with his loving wife, Jacqueline Lewis, of Tuscaloosa. Their love story was one of admiration and mutual respect, and Walter's affection for Jacqueline was as vibrant and enduring as it was when they first met. Even in his final moments, his love for her was loud and boisterous, and it will continue to whisper through the memories he leaves behind. Walter was a nurturing and guiding presence in the life of his son, Delfrum Lewis, whom he affectionately called "Mad Dog." Walter's devotion to Delfrum was the epitome of a true and loving father, and his legacy will live on through Delfrum and his beloved grandchildren: Deshonda Smith, Devon Lewis, Alisha Washington, Delton Lewis, and Markeise Lewis, each of whom brought immeasurable joy to Walter's life. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Emma P. Lewis, his brothers, James H. (Dank) Lewis, George Lewis, John W. Lewis, and his sisters, Betty Bunton, Lelia M. Howard, and Emma M. Lapsley. He is survived by his dear sisters, Ruby L. Smith of Virginia and Minnie P. (Truman) Bolden of Delaware, who will forever hold him in their hearts. Additionally, Walter cherished his goddaughters, Bertha (Davis) Dawkins of Killeen, Texas, and Shakita (Gregory) Marcus of Tuscaloosa, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family to him. Walter's educational journey began at Holt High School, where he graduated with aspirations that led him to enlist in the United States Army. His military career was a source of pride and offered him the opportunity to serve his country with honor. After his time in the Army, Walter continued to serve his fellow veterans at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs. Even after retirement, his dedication to the VA and his tireless work ethic were admired by all who knew him. Walter's life will be celebrated at a service held on June 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Benville Baptist Church, located at 3211 McGee Road, Cottondale, AL 35453. Family, friends, and all who were touched by Walter's kindness and generosity are invited to join in remembering a life well-lived and a man deeply loved. As we bid farewell to Walter, we find solace in the knowledge that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. His love, laughter, and legacy will remain forever etched in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Walter, knowing that you were loved beyond measure and will be missed more than words can express.
