March 21, 1960 — March 15, 2026

With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Walter Leverne Nelson on March 15, 2026, just days before his 66th birthday. Walter left this world surrounded by love in the comfort of his home, a fitting end for a man whose life was filled with warmth and compassion. Born on March 21, 1960, in the close-knit community of Kingstree, Williamsburg, South Carolina, Walter was the beloved son of the late Robert Junior Nelson and Bessie McFadden Nelson. He is predeceased by his cherished wife, Linda Gatlin Nelson, and leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that lives on in those who knew him. Walter's life was devoted to his family, and he is survived by his dear daughter, Quamillah Nelson, and his precious granddaughter, Na'Kyja Reaves, whom he adored beyond measure. His sisters, Barbara Staggers (Kenneth), Lona Stephen (David), Vernell Mallory, and Cynthia Nelson, along with his brother, James "Bubba" Nelson, mourn the loss of their beloved brother. Walter's family also includes his uncle, James Samuel, aunts in Connecticut and Florida, his goddaughter, Briell Remi Nelson, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Walter's career was marked by dedication and integrity. He began working at the Woolworth Department Store in Newark, New Jersey, during his high school years at Frank H. Morrell Campus. His commitment to service continued throughout his thirty-five-year tenure at Greystone Heath & Rehabilitation Center, complemented by part-time work at Kessler Rehabilitation. Walter's colleagues remember him as a beacon of joy and laughter, a friend who will be dearly missed. Outside of work, Walter found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished conversations with his daughter and granddaughter, found solace in old movies, and was an avid sports fan, particularly of football and basketball. One of his greatest joys was fishing with his best friends, Dwayne Liptrot and Eugene Holloway Sr., with Eugene Holloway Jr. standing by him as a devoted caregiver during his illness. A service to celebrate Walter's life will be held on July 31, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Perry Funeral Home, located at 34 Mercer Street, Newark, New Jersey 07103. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered strength and solace during this difficult time. A message from Walter's family reads, "Thank you, family and friends, for being my strength in weakness and my joy in sorrow. God Bless." In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Walter's memory to a charity of your choice, as a tribute to a life that was dedicated to love, friendship, and service. Walter Leverne Nelson will forever remain in our hearts, remembered for his kindness, humor, and unwavering love for those around him. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory be a blessing to us all.
