Walter Lance Smith, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away on March 14, 2026, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, Louisiana. Born on October 22, 1941, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Walter was a beacon of warmth and dedication throughout his 84 years. The son of the late Walter L. Smith, Sr. and Frances Miller Smith, Walter grew up in a family that valued hard work and compassion. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Elroy Smith, and his sister Lydia Gyimah. His legacy of love and resilience continues through his surviving family: his cherished wife, Mary Brown Smith, and his children Rebecca (Phil) Smith of Crowley, LA, Kailyn Smith of Baton Rouge, LA, Johnathan Weary and Louise (Brittany) Smith of Albany, LA, Kenny (Robin) Weary of Tampa, FL, and Malik (April) Smith. Walter was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to many, including three great-grandchildren, who were the apples of his eye. Walter graduated from Capitol Senior High in 1960, marking the beginning of a life filled with service and dedication. He served honorably in the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and bravely participated in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967, re-enlisting to continue his service from 1968 to 1972. After his military service, Walter embarked on a successful career as a first-class lineman with Bell South Telephone Company, dedicating 19 years to the profession. His commitment to service extended beyond his career into community involvement. Walter was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus, achieving the distinguished Fourth Degree. He served for 28 years, holding memberships in the St. Margaret Council 10178 in Albany, LA, and the John F. Kennedy Council 2952 in Hammond, LA. His contributions were recognized with the esteemed title of Life Member of both the Council and the Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his professional and community achievements, Walter found joy and solace in the simple pleasures of life. For over 50 years, he owned and operated the Bacon Maker Farm in Albany, LA. His time on the farm was a testament to his love for nature and his enduring work ethic. A service to celebrate Walter’s life will be held on March 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Wright Calvary Funeral Home, located at 304 S. Cherry St., Hammond, LA 70403.
