It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Walter Lance Smith, Jr., who departed this life on March 14, 2026, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA. Walter was born on October 22, 1960, in Baton Rouge, LA, to the late Walter L. Smith, Sr. and Frances Miller Smith. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who touched the lives of many with his warmth, generosity, and steadfast spirit. Walter's journey began in Baton Rouge, where he graduated from Capitol Senior High in 1960. His calling to serve led him to enlist in the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Walter bravely served his country during the Vietnam War from 1966-1967 and re-enlisted from 1968-1972, embodying the virtues of courage and dedication. After his honorable military service, Walter embarked on a career with Bell South Telephone Company, where he worked as a first-class lineman for 19 years. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were hallmarks of his career, earning him deep respect and admiration from colleagues and friends. Walter was a man of deep faith and community involvement, dedicating 28 years to the Knights of Columbus. He began his journey with the organization on October 22, 1967, achieving the highest honor of Fourth Degree on January 30, 1999. Walter was a valued member of St. Margaret Council 10178 in Albany, LA, and the John F. Kennedy Council 2952 in Hammond, LA. His dedication as a Fourth Degree Sir Knight with the Sir Knight Fred Gauthier Assembly 2801 was a testament to his unwavering service and commitment to his faith and community. Family was the cornerstone of Walter's life. He shared a beautiful marriage with Mary Brown Smith, who stood by his side with love and devotion. Together, they raised a family that was the pride and joy of Walter's life. He is survived by his cherished children: Rebecca (Phil) Smith of Crowley, LA, Kailyn Smith of Baton Rouge, LA, Johnathan Weary and Louise (Brittany) Smith of Albany, LA, Kenny (Robin) Weary of Tampa, FL, and Malik (April) Smith. Walter's legacy of love continues through his grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who brought light and laughter into his life. Beyond his professional and community accomplishments, Walter was a passionate steward of the land, owning and operating the Bacon Maker Farm in Albany, LA, for over 50 years. His farm was a place of joy, reflection, and family gatherings, where he shared his love for the outdoors and instilled a deep appreciation for nature in those around him. Walter was predeceased by his beloved parents, Walter L. Smith, Sr. and Frances Miller Smith, his brother Elroy Smith, and his sister Lydia Gyimah. He leaves behind a family woven with love and cherished memories that will continue to honor his life and legacy. A celebration of Walter's life will be held on March 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Wright Calvary Funeral Home, located at 304 S. Cherry St., Hammond, LA 70403. Family, friends, and all those touched by Walter's remarkable life are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who lived with purpose, integrity, and kindness.
