Born on July 14, 1948, in Pittsburgh, PA, Walter was the cherished son of Walter Bugh Hustead, Jr. and Emily Boyle Hustead. He carried forward the family name with pride and distinction. Walter's journey through life was marked by numerous accomplishments, beginning with his education. After graduating from New Trier High School, he pursued higher education at Menlo College and the University of San Francisco, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a successful career as an executive in the metals industry, where he dedicated over two decades of his professional life. Walter's professional endeavors, however, were only one aspect of his rich and fulfilling life. A man of diverse interests, Walter was an active member of the Arabian Horse Association, where his passion for these majestic animals earned him numerous awards and recognition. His zest for life extended beyond horses, as he was an accomplished athlete who completed over 26 marathons and triathlons. His love for sports was further exemplified by his spirited attempt at joining the senior golf tour. In his personal life, Walter was a devoted family man. He married the love of his life, Mary Starbird McCormick, on June 20, 1970. Their union, which spanned an incredible 56 years, was a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Jennifer McCormick Hustead and Walter Bugh Hustead IV, who, along with Walter's four adored grandchildren—Kendall Houck, Wally Hustead, Mae Hustead, and Clara Hustead—were the light of his life. Walter is also survived by his two beloved sisters, Cindy Owens and Holly Brodell, who, along with his extended family and friends, will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. Walter's life was not just about achievements and accolades; it was about the connections he forged and the impact he had on those around him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Walter's memory, as a way to honor his generous spirit and commitment to making the world a better place. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
