In Loving Memory of Walter Ashton Spencer
Walter Ashton Spencer, a beloved son, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend, peacefully departed this world on his birthday, March 29, 2026, at the age of 79. Born in Orange, New Jersey in 1947, Walter's journey through life was marked by his loving kindness, warmth, and sensitivity, attributes that endeared him to all who knew him.
Walter was the cherished son of the late Walter H. Cramp, Jr. and Edith Hilda Hare, and he was predeceased by his sister, Gloria Diane Feaster, and brother, David Michael Cramp. He leaves behind his devoted siblings, Steven and Patricia, as well as his "adopted" nephew, Robert Justin Miller. He was a proud uncle to Claudia, Erin, Kerry, and the late Andy and Tim, and a beloved grand-uncle to a host of grandnephews and grandnieces.
Walter's educational journey began at Livingston High School, where he graduated in 1965. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the New Jersey Institute in 1976, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in engineering. Walter worked in various capacities as a Civil Engineer, obtaining his Professional Engineer license in New Jersey in 1986. With a focus on bridge design and safety inspections, he rose to the position of Sussex County Bridge Engineer in 2010. His dedication and exceptional leadership skills earned him the role of Sussex County Engineer and Administrator for the Department of Engineering and Planning, where he served with distinction for seven years before retiring.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Walter was an active member of his community. He was a past member of Al-Anon ACOA and served as a Big Buddy for Camp Erin in Montgomery County, MD, demonstrating his commitment to helping others. Walter's love for the water was as vast as the ocean, with sailing becoming one of his great passions. As a member of the Raritan Yacht Club, he competed in numerous sailboat races and was mentored by the esteemed British transatlantic sailor, Paul G. Spens. Their annual fall cruises to New England aboard the 40-ft non-motorized sailboat "Skelda" left Walter with cherished memories and a lifelong love of sailing.
Walter's attention to detail and professionalism were matched by his willingness to help others and his unwavering tenacity. He was a man who climbed life's mountains and shared his vision with those around him. As his family lovingly recalls, “One climbs in the mountains, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself below by the memory of what one saw higher up.”
A celebration of Walter's life will be held on November 24, 2026, at the ILCC Clubhouse, located at 25 East Shore Trail, Denville, NJ 07834. The service will begin at 12:00 PM, and all who knew and loved Walter are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Walter's memory to Camp Erin in Montgomery County, MD, an organization close to his heart.
Walter Ashton Spencer's life was a testament to compassion, dedication, and love. His spirit will continue to inspire all those fortunate enough to have known him. May he sail on peacefully in eternal waters.
