Vonnie Edward Crites
November 2, 1949 — February 26, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vonnie Edward Crites. Von passed away at home on February 26, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on November 2, 1949, in Modesto, California, to parents Delbert and Dorothy Crites. Von's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love for his family.
Von's early years were spent in the rolling landscapes of California, where he developed a deep-rooted connection to the land. He attended Lammersvillie, Jefferson, and New Jerusalem schools and then graduated from Tracy Joint Union High School. From a young age, Von demonstrated a strong work ethic, beginning his career at just 12 years old under the mentorship of Bernard Ellisagary at sheep camp. Bernard's influence encouraged Von to join the military and fostered his love for cattle ranching—a passion he maintained throughout his life.
Von proudly volunteered and served in the United States Marine Corps with H Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry, completing two combat tours in Vietnam. Upon returning home, his career path led him through various roles, from hauling hay to driving a gas truck for Moore Petroleum, and eventually to a managerial position at S.T. Services in the port of Stockton, where he worked until his retirement.
Von was involved with 4H, FFA, and dancing competitions with his sister Suzanne Hewitt at the Western Horse and Trailer Club. He was also a member of the Clutch Burners. His love for the outdoors was evident in the way he raised his family, sharing countless adventures hunting, fishing, camping, and boating.
Von was a passionate cattle rancher, devoted to the land that had been in his family since 1876. His pride in his ranch and herd of cattle was second only to the pride he held for his family. He was a man tough as nails, yet generous to a fault—always willing to lend a helping hand. Known for his good humor and engaging conversations.
In nearly 50 years of marriage to his wife, Patricia (Patty), Von built a family that includes his daughters Michelle Vicente and Amy Reynolds, along with her husband Beau Reynolds. His son, Jaryd Crites, and his wife Melissa also survive him, as do his seven grandchildren—Mikayla Vicente, Eric Golnic, Kali and Waylon Reynolds, Nevaeh, Avery, and AJ Hanes. Von was predeceased by his parents, Delbert and Dorothy, and his brother, Clay Crites.
A service to honor Von's life will be held on March 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Tracy Memorial Chapel, located at 5 W Highland Avenue, Tracy, CA 95376.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Von's memory to the Wounded Warriors organization, reflecting his enduring support for fellow veterans.
A celebration of Von's life will follow at 12:30 PM at the VFW Hall, located at 12455 W Ripon Rd, Ripon, CA.
