In Loving Memory

Virginia Marcella Jeffries
January 3, 1947 — May 23, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Virginia Marcella Jeffries, who departed this world peacefully on May 23, 2026, at Ancora Hospice Gibson House in Reidsville, NC. Born on January 3, 1947, in the quaint town of Julian, NC, Virginia, affectionately known as "Marcel" to her family and friends, graced this world with her kindness, resilience, and unwavering love for those around her.
A beloved daughter to the late Joe Franklin May and Mary Esther Daniel, Marcel was the youngest of a lively family that included her brothers, Melvin and Roy A. May, and sisters, Rebecca "Sis" Butner and Mary Ellen Butner, who predeceased her. She grew up enveloped in the warmth of a close-knit community, where she developed a love for nature, particularly in tending to her vibrant flowers and lush gardens.
Marcel's life was further enriched when she met and married her beloved husband, Haywood T. "Jeff" Jeffries, in November 1981. Their union was a testament to love and companionship, spanning 29 wonderful years until Jeff's passing. Together, they built a life filled with cherished moments of joy, laughter, and shared dreams.
An alumna of Southeast High School, Marcel pursued her passion for beauty and style at Leon's Beauty School. Her career blossomed at the Container Corporation, which evolved into Smurfit-Stone Corporation, and later became Graphic Packaging, where she dedicated many years of service until her retirement. Marcel's professional life was marked by her diligence, integrity, and the camaraderie she shared with her colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Marcel's nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family. She was a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews, including a very special niece, Marissa May Wilson (Darrel), and nieces Sherry May Gwyn and Sheila Butner. She was also a loving aunt to nephews Alton May (Cherise) and Ronnie Butner. The legacy of her love continues through her many great-nieces, great-nephews, and even great-great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom were touched by her warmth and generosity.
Her life was a tapestry of simple joys and meaningful pursuits—shopping excursions, delightful meals shared with friends and family, and the serenity she found in her garden. Marcel's presence was a gentle reminder of the beauty in everyday moments and the enduring strength found in nature's cycles.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Ancora Hospice Care and Gibson House. Their dedicated care and kindness provided comfort and support to Marcel and her family during her final days.
In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Marcel's life and legacy. As we celebrate her journey, we hold dear the memories and love she shared, forever etched in our hearts.
Marcel's life was a testament to love, resilience, and the beauty of a generous spirit. As we say our farewells, we do so with gratitude for the gift of her life and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her.
