In Loving Memory
Virgil Wayne Johnson Sr
December 25, 1961 — August 18, 2025
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virgil Wayne Johnson Sr., who peacefully departed this world on August 18, 2025, at his cherished home in Vermillion, South Dakota. Born on December 25, 1961, in Ravina, South Dakota, Virgil blessed this earth with his presence for 63 remarkable years, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and artistry.
Virgil was the beloved son of Millicent and Kelvin Johnson, who predeceased him, along with his dear sister, Lois Lopez, and many other cherished family members. Though his family has experienced the pain of loss, they find comfort in the memories they share and the bonds that remain unbroken.
A devoted father, Virgil is survived by his children, each of whom carries forward his indomitable spirit: Arianah Johnson (affectionately known as Awna), Sitrice Johnson (Ceta), Taylor Swift Eagle (fondly called Tator Tot), Nate Marshall, Christopher Castillo, Tiera SE, Maria Lupita, Trey Michael, Virgil Johnson Jr., and Tai Rain. His legacy continues through his 17 treasured grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Virgil shared a profound and loving partnership with Danielle Swift Eagle for 10 wonderful years, a relationship marked by mutual respect and deep affection. Their journey together was a testament to the power of love and companionship.
A man of intellect and curiosity, Virgil pursued his passion for understanding human behavior by studying Sociology in college. His education was not just academic, but a lens through which he viewed the world, always striving to connect with others on a deeper level.
Virgil was an old-school member of RBH, where he found community and camaraderie. He was a man of many talents and interests, with a love for beading, fishing, and collecting little trinkets. His greatest joy was crafting Native American artwork, a testament to his rich cultural heritage and his artistic soul.
Virgil's heart was as vast as his laughter was infectious. Known for his goofy, outgoing nature and his unforgettable laugh, he spread joy wherever he went. His home was a haven of warmth, creativity, and good humor, where friends like Yermi Carrillo would gather to exchange old-school memorabilia and stories.
Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate the vibrant life Virgil led—a life filled with love, art, family, and friendship. His spirit, creativity, and laughter will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A memorial service to honor Virgil's life will be held at a date and location to be announced, where family and friends will gather to share memories, laughter, and tears, celebrating the remarkable man he was.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Virgil's memory to organizations that support Native American arts and culture, ensuring that his legacy of creativity and cultural pride continues to inspire future generations.
Though he has left this earthly realm, Virgil's essence remains an eternal light, guiding us with his humor, kindness, and love. May he rest in peace, forever remembered and forever loved.
