Virgil Thomas “Tom” Gowin
September 9, 1942 — June 7, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Virgil Thomas “Tom” Gowin, who left this world on June 7, 2026, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family at his home. Tom was born on September 9, 1942, in the charming town of LaGrange, Kentucky, to the late Virgil and Alberta Gowin. He was 83 years old.
Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Preceded in death by his parents and his beloved older sister, Lavern Brady, Tom carried their memory with him in every endeavor. He is survived by his cherished wife of 56 years, the former Lucy Floyd, who was the love of his life and his partner in all things.
Together, Tom and Lucy raised two wonderful children, Thomas Kent Gowin, who shares his life with partner Kara Kinney, and Katherine Gowin Badgett, who is married to David Badgett. Tom was a proud grandfather to three beautiful grandchildren, Sam Gowin, Libby Badgett, and Will Badgett, each of whom brought immense joy to his life. His sisters, Patricia Moore and Ruby Coomes, also survive him, remembering him as a generous and supportive brother.
Tom's educational journey began at Oldham County High School, where he graduated in 1961 and showcased his athletic prowess on the basketball court. He continued his studies at Western Kentucky University, preparing for a career that would see him excel as a regional manager at BASF Corporation until his retirement in 2001. His work took him and Lucy to new homes in Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, where they made lifelong friends and countless memories.
A man of deep faith, Tom served in various churches throughout his life, embodying his Christian values in every action. His passions were manifold, from the greens of the golf course to the harmonious melodies he sang as a member of The Mystics during his retirement years. Yet, his heart was most full when he was working the land. Whether tending to a friend's farm or gardening with Lucy, he found profound happiness in nurturing life from the soil. Tom had a special bond with his dogs, companions who were always by his side, with Otis, Name, and the especially dear Gus holding a special place in his heart.
Those who knew Tom will remember him as a helpful and caring son, a faithful husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a compassionate and generous brother. His kindness left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to friends, relatives, and the skilled doctors and Hospice staff who provided care and support during Tom's final years. Their compassion and assistance were invaluable and deeply appreciated.
As we celebrate Tom's remarkable life, we find comfort in the memories he leaves behind and the legacy of love and kindness he imparted to all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
