Virgil E. "Bill" Walden

October 25, 1925 — May 19, 2004

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Virgil E. "Bill" Walden, a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. Bill departed this life on May 19, 2004, at the age of 78, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 25, 1925, in Harlan, Kentucky, Bill was a beacon of warmth and resilience, a man whose life was a testament to love, service, and community. Bill was the beloved son of the late Chris and Rosa Walden, who instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity. He was predeceased by his cherished parents and his dear sisters, LaVerne and Lillian. Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in his devoted wife, Peggy L. Walden, who stood by his side through life's every challenge and triumph. Together, Bill and Peggy nurtured a beautiful family, blessed with five children: Beth, Gayle, Lillian, LaVerne, and Ben. Bill's love for his children was boundless, and he was a guiding light in their lives, teaching them the importance of kindness, perseverance, and community. His love extended to his sisters, Vinie and Carolyn, with whom he shared a lifelong bond of support and laughter. Bill's life was enriched by the joy of being a grandfather to ten adoring grandchildren, who will forever remember his gentle guidance, hearty laughter, and the countless stories he shared. His legacy will live on through them, as they carry forward the values and love he imparted. In his youth, Bill answered the call to serve his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War. His service was a reflection of his deep sense of duty and patriotism, traits that he carried with him throughout his life. For 25 years, Bill was the proud owner of Past Times Lounge, a beloved gathering place where he built a community rooted in camaraderie and goodwill. His establishment was more than a business; it was a haven for friends and neighbors to share stories, celebrate milestones, and support one another through life's trials and triumphs. Family, friends, and community members are invited to celebrate Bill's remarkable life at a service to be held on May 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Melvin Cemetery, located on Stinking Creek Road. As we gather to honor his memory, we will reflect on the indelible impact he made on the lives he touched and the enduring legacy of love and service he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bill's name to a charity of your choice, as a tribute to his lifelong commitment to helping others. Bill Walden's life was a tapestry woven with love, service, and community. Though he may have left this physical world, his spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well-lived.
