Violet Gumbs
April 6, 1944 - May 1, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we celebrate the remarkable life of Violet Gumbs, who passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, at a nursing home after a long and courageous battle with dementia. Born on April 6, 1944, in the serene village of Cotton Ground, Nevis, Violet was a beacon of resilience and love, whose life story is interwoven with strength, resourcefulness, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
Violet was the cherished daughter of the late Gladys Abbott and Telbert Isles, whose loving guidance shaped the compassionate and determined woman she became. Her early years in Cotton Ground laid the foundation for a life marked by simplicity and grace. Despite the challenges she faced, Violet's spirit remained unbroken, and her legacy is one of dedication to family and community.
Her journey took a significant turn when she moved to St. Thomas, where fate introduced her to the love of her life, Albert Gumbs, through his brother, Justin Illidge of St. Martin. Their love blossomed, and together they built a family, welcoming five wonderful children: Cheril, Albert, Arlene, Chearon, and Annette. In March of 1976, at the age of 31, Violet and Albert sealed their love in marriage, a union that would endure until Albert's passing.
Violet's life was devoted to her family, and her role as a homemaker was one she embraced with passion and ingenuity. Her kitchen was the heart of the home, where she turned modest ingredients into feasts of love and taught her children the art of survival. Her resourcefulness knew no bounds; she found creative solutions in times of scarcity, teaching her children invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability.
Necessity also transformed Violet into a skilled seamstress, crafting school skirts and clothing for her daughters with unwavering dedication. Her hands, though not formally trained, wove threads of love and care into every stitch, ensuring her children were always dressed with dignity and pride.
Violet's legacy lives on in her surviving family: her daughters Annette Hobson, Chearon, Arlene, Cheril, and Torita; her sons Boyblue, Eustace, and Toruta; and a sprawling family tree that includes 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. While she has joined her beloved Albert and her parents in eternal rest, she leaves behind a legacy of love and unity that will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
To honor Violet's life, a service will be held on May 8, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Turnbull Funeral Home, located at St. Thomas, VI 00802. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a woman whose life was a testament to the power of love, perseverance, and devotion.
As we say our goodbyes, we hold onto the precious memories of Violet Gumbs, a woman whose warmth and resilience touched the lives of all who were fortunate to know her. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, and her legacy of love will be a beacon of hope for generations to come.
