March 28, 1946 — June 15, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of our beloved Viola Elizabeth Binion Nelson. Viola departed this world peacefully on June 15, 2026, in the comforting surroundings of her home. She was born on March 28, 1946, in the vibrant city of El Paso, Texas, and her life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Viola was the cherished daughter of the late Forrest and Viola Binion, and she carried forward the values they instilled in her throughout her life. She was predeceased by her parents, her dear sons Bradley and Troy Nelson, and her great-grandson Chadddrick. Despite these profound losses, Viola's resilience and spirit remained unbroken, radiating warmth and compassion to all who knew her.
Viola's legacy is lovingly carried forward by her fraternal twin sister, Jayne and her husband Harold Brainard, daughter-in-law Kathleen Nelson, her treasured grandchildren Kyle Haney, Briena Guzman, and Tristain Nelson, and her great-grandchildren Basilio Fraire and Kemara. Each of them holds a special place in their hearts for the matriarch who guided them with love and wisdom.
Her journey of education began at Ysleta High School, where she attended from 1960 to 1964, and continued at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Viola graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1968, marking the start of a lifelong commitment to education and learning.
For many years, Viola dedicated herself to nurturing young minds at Del Norte Elementary School, where she worked until her retirement in 2016. Her influence extended beyond her classroom as an active member of the Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society that celebrates women in teaching.
Viola's faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she found solace and community at Vista Del Sol Church, where she worshiped for decades. Her love for the Bible and her devotion to studying its teachings enriched her life and the lives of those around her.
An admirer of beauty and creativity, Viola delighted in collecting apple-themed décor and exploring various artistic styles. Her quick wit and humor, paired with an open heart, made her a joy to be around. She touched many lives with her kindness, treating everyone she met with love and respect, and leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
In honor of Viola's memory, her family wishes to share a special message: "She will be missed every day. Truly a wonderful daughter, sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend."
Viola Elizabeth Binion Nelson will be remembered for the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the legacy of warmth and wisdom she leaves behind. Her memory will forever be a guiding light for those who were blessed to know her.
