Vicki Nelson Kornfuhrer

February 13, 1949 — May 28, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Vicki Nelson Kornfuhrer, a cherished wife, devoted mother, beloved grandmother, esteemed educator, and accomplished artist. Vicki left this world peacefully on May 28, 2026, at the age of 77, surrounded by the love of her family. Her journey began on February 13, 1949, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she was born to the late Clayton and Thelma Byrd Nelson. Vicki’s life was a testament to the power of education, creativity, and love. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sandy Perkins, but leaves behind a legacy carried on by her devoted husband of nearly 57 years, Harold Kornfuhrer. Together, they built a life filled with warmth and joy, raising two beautiful and intelligent children, Holly Roberts Hovey (married to Rob) and Kevin Kornfuhrer (married to Jennifer). Vicki was a proud grandmother to four adored grandchildren: Nikki and Balor Roberts, and Ella and Eden Kornfuhrer, who were the lights of her life. After graduating from Hattiesburg High School in 1967, Vicki pursued her passion for teaching at the University of Southern Mississippi, earning her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1970. Her thirst for knowledge led her to further her studies at the University of Texas at Houston and Ole Miss. Vicki dedicated her life to education, beginning her career as a third-grade teacher in Batesville, MS, and later sharing her talents with students in Texas City, TX; Arlington, TX; Tupelo, MS; and Fulton, MS. Her dedication to her profession was recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year in Arlington, Texas, and at Lawndale in Tupelo, MS. Vicki’s passion for learning extended beyond the classroom. She was a recipient of a Fulbright Grant, which allowed her to represent Mississippi in Japan, and she also received a National Geographic grant to study the rainforests in Bolivia. These experiences enriched her teaching and inspired countless students. Her commitment to education continued even in retirement, as she worked with the JBHM Education Group, sharing her expertise and supporting fellow educators. A faithful Christian, Vicki was active in her church communities wherever she lived, and her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Vicki was a proud member of the MAE, NEA, and the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was an artist at heart, finding joy in pottery, sculpture, and painting. Her hands were always busy creating beauty, whether in the classroom, the garden, or her art studio. Those who knew Vicki will remember her as a happy person who enjoyed life to the fullest, sharing her knowledge and experiences with those around her. A celebration of Vicki’s life will be held at St. Paul Methodist Church, where family and friends will gather to honor the remarkable life she lived. As we say goodbye, we hold her memory close, cherishing the lessons she taught us and the love she gave so freely. Vicki’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family, her students, and all those whose lives she touched. We take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her, and we are grateful for the time we were blessed to share with her.
