In Loving Memory

Vernon O’Connor
June 6, 1947 — August 19, 2025
Vernon O’Connor, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Streeter, North Dakota, on August 19, 2025, surrounded by his cherished family. Born on June 6, 1947, in the serene landscapes of South Dakota, Vern was the son of the late Burdette and Berniece O’Connor. He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Patrick O’Connor, Rita O’Connor Cooper, Sharon O’Connor, and Robert “Bobbie” O’Connor, and his great-granddaughter, Hailie Hartsock.
Vern's life was a testament to love, kindness, and craftsmanship. In 1964, Vern met Sheena Dunn, and though it wasn't until later that he discovered they had two children together, Karie Hudson and Kevin Newsom, the bond he shared with his family was always profound. In 1978, Vern moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where he met his first wife, Deb. Together, they welcomed three wonderful children into the world: Jodi Brockman, Chris O’Connor, and Melanie Walker. Vern's family tree expanded further when he married Emma Jean Ingberg in 2005, moving to Streeter the following year, where they built a life filled with love and laughter.
Vern's legacy is carried on by his children, Karie Hudson, Kevin Newsom, Jodi (Nathan) Brockman, Chris O’Connor, Melanie Walker, his son-in-law Jeff Walker, and his step-daughter Jamie (Ernie) Bartig. He is also survived by his sister Sheila O’Connor, brother Larry O’Connor, and a large, loving extended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A master carpenter, Vern was known for his exceptional skills and the generous spirit with which he shared them. He was always ready to help friends and neighbors with their projects, leaving behind a community enriched by his contributions. His handiwork was not just functional but infused with creativity and care, turning ordinary spaces into places of beauty and warmth.
One of Vern's most cherished creations was 'Vern's Place,' a gazebo designed by his late wife, Emma Jean. It became a sanctuary where Vern and Emma Jean, along with their beloved dogs Lizzy and Justice, would gather to enjoy the simple pleasures of life—fireside chats and quiet drinks under the stars. Even after Emma Jean's passing, Vern continued to cherish these moments, surrounded by the love and memories they built together.
Vern's heart was as generous as his hands were skilled. He was always there to lend a helping hand, expecting nothing in return, embodying a spirit of kindness that touched everyone he met.
In accordance with his wishes, Vern will be cremated, and no services will be held at this time. The family asks that those wishing to honor Vern's memory consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving and helping others.
Vernon O’Connor's life was a beautiful tapestry of love, generosity, and craftsmanship. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him. His family, friends, and community will forever hold him in their hearts, cherishing the indelible mark he left on their lives.
