It is with heavy hearts yet immense gratitude for the life she lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Verneta (Nanny) on September 5, 2026, just one month shy of her 88th birthday. Born in Dallas, Texas, on October 5, 1938, to Rube A. Baker and Dena B. Baker, Verneta was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Verneta's journey through life was marked by her quick wit and warm smile, traits that endeared her to everyone she met. Her sassy shirts and the vibrant presence she carried with her could light up any room and bring warmth to all gatherings. To know Verneta was to become a part of her family, as she welcomed everyone with open arms and a loving heart. Her professional life was as colorful as her personality. For many years, Verneta was the Staff Supervisor of Costumes at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, where her creativity and leadership left an indelible mark. Alongside her career, she joined a bowling league in the 1970s, playing for The Wampus Cats, and enjoyed the camaraderie and fun that came with it. Verneta was a gifted crafter, finding joy in creating handmade treasures for her loved ones. From sewing her daughter's childhood clothes to crafting her iconic tissue boxes and plastic canvas work, her creations were cherished by all. Her crafting was not just a hobby; it was a way to spread joy and connect with others, leaving smiles wherever her work went. Family was the cornerstone of Verneta's life. She was predeceased by her parents, Rube and Dena Baker, her siblings Otho N. Baker, Ellav B. Baker, Aline Baker, Tolly L. Baker, Carlous Baker, Charles D. Johnston, and Gerald A. Baker, and her sons Sean Patrick Hughes and Christopher D. Steele. She is survived by her children, daughter Susan E. Steele, son James B. Steele II and his wife Hazel, and daughter Kristie C. Lamendola. Her legacy continues through her granddaughters Rachel Buse and husband Kyle, Amanda Bird and wife Brandy, Kaitlyn Carmichael and husband Mike, Alicia Steele and husband Kris, Alanna Gebauer and husband Hugo, Teresa Lamendola and husband Ray, Rebecca Lamendola, and Melissa Lamendola, as well as her 14 great-grandchildren. Verneta's family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Wisteria Place for their attentive care over the years, and to Hendrick Hospice for their compassionate support during Verneta's final days. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Verneta's memory, honoring her spirit of generosity and kindness. As we celebrate Verneta's remarkable life, we hold onto the love and wisdom she shared with us. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
