February 16, 1929 — December 5, 2025
Verna Audrey Groundwater Dennis, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a beacon of warmth and strength, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, at the age of 96. Verna was born on February 16, 1929, in Vancouver, to loving parents Charles and Sophie Johnson, who instilled in her the values of compassion and resilience that defined her life.
Verna was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend. Her life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and service. She was predeceased by her devoted parents and her two loving husbands, Charles Groundwater, whom she married in June 1945 and shared a beautiful life with until his passing in November 1975, and William Dennis, whom she married in 1977 and who preceded her in death in the early 2000s.
Verna is survived by her adoring children: Don, along with his wife Goldie; Wendy, with her husband Dan Porter; and Judy, with her husband Rodger White. She was the proud grandmother of Cinde Porter, Roxanne (Dwayne) Warawa, Dustin (Tracey) White, Sean (Katherine) Groundwater, and Tanya (Marvin) Klassen. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Madison, McKenna, Danica, Brendan, Anthony, Isabelle, Megan, and Mason, who brought immense joy to her life. Verna also leaves behind her dear nephew, Robert Groundwater, who held a special place in her heart.
In 1961, Verna and her family moved to Williams Lake, where she embraced the ranching life she loved, a passion first nurtured in her childhood on her family's farm. Her love for animals and the great outdoors was infectious, and she shared it generously with everyone she met.
Verna's commitment to her community was unwavering. She was a guiding force as the leader of the Soda Creek 4-H Club, imparting life lessons and skills to the youth. As a founding member of the Lynn Creek Women's Institute and a dedicated member of the BC Cattlemen's Association, she worked tirelessly to support and uplift those around her. Her dedication extended to her faith, as she served as a Sunday School Teacher, nurturing the spiritual growth of countless young hearts.
Her friends and family will fondly remember Verna for her laughter, her wisdom, and her unwavering belief in the goodness of people. She was a woman of quiet strength and endless love, whose legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of Verna's remarkable life will be held on July 24, 2026, at 1:00 PM. As we gather to honor her memory, we will remember her kindness, her generosity, and the profound impact she had on our lives.
