Verlyn M. Ludwig

June 3, 1937 — July 3, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Verlyn M. Ludwig, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, on July 3, 2026. Verlyn passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his devoted wife and children, enveloped by the love that he so generously shared throughout his life. He was 89 years old. Born on June 3, 1937, in Forreston, Illinois, to Melvin and Esther Ludwig, Verlyn grew up with a deep appreciation for family, agriculture, and community. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Milford, and his sister Sharon, but leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience. Verlyn married the love of his life, Velma, on March 27, 1959, in Fulton, Illinois. Together, they built a life rich in love and mutual respect, celebrating 66 wonderful years of marriage. Their union was blessed with four children: Debra (Don) Parker of Olivehill, TN, Mark (Susan) Ludwig of Village of Lakewood, IL, Troy (Paula) Ludwig of Monroe, WI, and Susan (Robert) Shetter of Oakland, TN. Verlyn cherished his role as a grandfather to nine grandchildren: Alyssa & Chris Pittman, Jessica Dawson, Aura Ludwig, Gabby Holland, Kennedy Ripp, Chase, Ty & Marcus Shetter, and was delighted by his five great-grandchildren, with three more expected soon. Verlyn's life was deeply rooted in farming, a passion he pursued tirelessly throughout his life as he cared for dairy and beef cattle and tended to his crops. After retiring from active farming, he enjoyed a fulfilling second career driving a school bus, where he continued to impact young lives with his warmth and kindness. A man of faith, Verlyn was a dedicated member of the Olivehill Baptist Church, where he formed many lifelong friendships. His commitment to his community was evident in the joy he found participating in local events, including his prideful involvement in showing cattle and competing in tractor pulls with his cherished Oliver 1650 tractor. Verlyn also took great pride in his extensive collection of toy Oliver tractors, a tribute to his enduring love for farming machinery. Verlyn's spirit was one of generosity and joy. His welcoming smile and outgoing personality were a beacon to all who knew him. He was always present for his grandchildren, cheering them on at their sporting events and creating cherished memories on family vacations. His kindness and generous spirit touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. In keeping with his family's wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor Verlyn's remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Verlyn's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause close to his heart. Verlyn M. Ludwig will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love and joy he brought into the world. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will carry forward his spirit of kindness and community.
