Vergia Mae Herbert Mgbo

Vergia Mae Herbert Mgbo, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on October 17, 2025. Born on April 12, 1957, in Laurens County, South Carolina, Vergia was a beacon of light and warmth to everyone she encountered. She was the cherished daughter of the late Mr. Larry R Herbert Sr and Mrs. Lizzie Mae Bryson Herbert, and she was predeceased by her sister, Carolyn Bryson. Vergia's life was a testament to the power of kindness and connection. Graduating from Laurens District 55 High School in 1975, she embarked on a career that saw her managing a Barnes and Noble bookstore, and later serving as an office secretary and case manager with CSBG/LIHEAP (Gleamns). Her professional journey was marked by a dedication to service and a genuine interest in the lives of those she worked with. Vergia was a devoted member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, where she found deep joy and peace in her faith. She was passionate about sharing the Bible's teachings and the hope of restoration and life through Jesus Christ's ransom sacrifice—a belief that she held close to her heart. Her warm and friendly nature made her the life of every gathering, always ready with a laugh or a dance. She loved to read and explore new restaurants, finding joy in both the simple and the profound. Vergia had an extraordinary ability to make friends with ease, and her lively chatter and laughter will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Vergia is survived by her dear daughter, Ms. Michelle Ebere Mgbo of Concord, NC; her sisters, Ms. Phyllis D Herbert of Laurens, SC, Mrs. Vernessa L (Duane Sr) Dickens of Bowie, MD, and Ms. Teresa Herbert Pearson of Laurens, SC; and her brothers, Mr. Larry R Herbert Jr of Clinton, SC, and Mr. Anthony (Annie) Graden of Colorado Springs, CO. Her family also includes her uncles, Mr. Willie C Herbert of Laurens, SC, and Mr. Marshel Bryson Jr of Enoree, SC; her aunt, Ms. Dorothy H Williams of Gray Court, SC; and her great aunt, Ms. Elizabeth T Kilgo of Charlotte, NC. She leaves behind a loving legacy of eight nieces and nephews, thirteen great nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and extended family and friends. Vergia's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and faith. In honor of her memory, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
