Velvet Lureem Washington, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at the age of 61. Born on November 19, 1964, in Jacksonville, Florida, Velvet was the cherished daughter of Dessie Mae Howell and Calvin Bryant. Throughout her life, Velvet embodied warmth, generosity, and an indomitable spirit, touching the hearts of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Velvet's life was a tapestry of love and dedication. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Samuel J. Washington, whose memory she cherished deeply. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter. Velvet is survived by her son, Antonio Lashawn Howell, who was the apple of her eye, and her grandchildren, Antonio Rashad Howell, Jaylan Ramari Howell, Knowledge Masai Howell, Jahmati L. Tim, and Mikah Khalif Howell. Her legacy continues to shine brightly through her great-grandchildren, Antonio Prince Howell and Ley'ana Le'shai Howell-Jackson, who brought her endless joy. A devoted daughter and sister, Velvet leaves behind her parents, Dessie Mae Howell and Calvin Bryant, and her siblings, Barry Howell, Kimberly Howell, and Joseph Howell. Her family circle extended to include her niece, Daisha Washington, and her stepson, Don Washington, as well as a host of other loving family and friends who will continue to carry her memory in their hearts. Velvet pursued her education through the Duval School System and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. Her passion for caring for others led her to nursing school, where she honed her skills and expanded her capacity for compassion. Professionally, she channeled her love for cooking into a fulfilling career as a chef for Sodexo, where she delighted colleagues and patrons alike with her culinary talents. Outside of her professional life, Velvet was a woman of many passions. She loved to cook and dance, her infectious joy evident in every meal she prepared and every step she took. Velvet found solace in the beauty of a garden and the melodies of music, both feeding her soul and nurturing her spirit. In accordance with Velvet's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held, allowing her family to celebrate her life in an intimate setting. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Velvet Lureem Washington. Velvet's presence was a vibrant light in the lives of those who knew her, and her spirit will continue to inspire love, unity, and compassion. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
