Obituary of Velma Catherine Ford Velma Catherine Ford, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, after valiantly battling a long illness. Born on January 7, 1938, in Lafayette, Indiana, Velma was the cherished daughter of Austin and Mary Suter. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Russell Ford, with whom she shared a beautiful marriage that began on July 24, 1956, in their hometown. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Velma's journey through life was marked by her warmth, humor, and a deep commitment to helping others. She had a remarkable career with the Brevard County School System in Melbourne, Florida, where she dedicated 36 years to nurturing young minds and supporting her community. Her colleagues and students fondly remember her radiant smile and infectious laughter that could brighten the darkest of days. In 1998, Velma and Russell embraced retirement and moved to Lakeport, Florida. There, Velma became an active and cherished member of the Lakeport Christian Church, forming close friendships that lasted for decades. Her faith and fellowship brought her immense joy and comfort. Velma's love for life extended beyond her professional and spiritual endeavors. She was an avid reader and a talented crocheter, delighting in creating beautiful pieces for her loved ones. Her compassionate nature shone through in every aspect of her life, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Her loving spirit and quick wit endeared her to all who knew her. Velma's legacy lives on through her adored daughter, Cindy Mills, and her husband, William, as well as her treasured granddaughter, Savannah Mills. She is also survived by her nephew, Ken Suter, and her niece, Candace Silverthorne. Velma was predeceased by her parents, Austin and Mary Suter, her brothers, Laurel and Dale Suter, and her sister, Elenor Suter. A celebration of Velma's life will be held on September 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Lakeport Christian Church, located at 10947 Fl-hwy 78, Moore Haven, Florida 33471. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at Your Life Memory Care Assisted Living Facility and the devoted members and friends of the Lakeport Christian Church for their generosity and support in organizing this memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Velma's memory to a charity of your choice, as a tribute to her generous spirit and love for helping others. Velma Catherine Ford will be remembered as a beacon of kindness and joy, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.
