Velma Cameron Home Stewart

March 31, 2026 — April 25, 2026

With profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Velma Cameron Home Stewart, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, on April 25, 2026. Surrounded by the love of her children, Velma slipped away, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, wisdom, and unwavering kindness. Born on March 31, 1926, in the serene landscapes of Alberta, Velma was the beloved daughter of John Cameron Home and Winifred Bickle Home. Her early years were marked by a keen intellect and a boundless curiosity, which she carried through her academic pursuits, graduating with honors. It was during these formative years that she crossed paths with a dashing young man who shared her passion for railroads. Their love story unfolded like a beautiful journey, leading to a marriage that blossomed into a family of five children, a legacy that now numbers over 50 relatives. Velma, affectionately known as Vel, was predeceased by her dear husband, "Jack" John Allan Stewart, the revered patriarch of the Home Stewart Clan. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, "Jean" Jacqueline Jean Home Knox, "Beth" Florence Elizabeth Home Ramsey, and her brother "Harry" John Harry Home, alongside many other cherished relatives. Upon her arrival in the United States, Velma embraced her new community with open arms, becoming a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Libertyville for over half a century. Her commitment to service shone brightly as she organized countless rummage sales, volunteered at "The Blue Smock," and took part in vibrant bowling leagues. Though she may have disliked weeding, Velma found immense joy in her garden, nurturing rhubarb from Scotland and crafting beautiful ceramics. Her life was a testament to the joy of creating and sharing. Velma's warmth and quick wit were legendary, her smile a balm to those around her. She was a beacon of wisdom, always ready with sage advice and a kind word. Her ability to make others feel valued was unparalleled, and she taught those around her the importance of kindness, generosity, and resilience. Velma was a guiding light, showing others how to navigate life's challenges with grace and dignity. A memorial service celebrating Velma's life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville, located at 219 W. Maple Ave, Libertyville, IL 60048. The service will also be available via livestream at https://firstpreslibertyville.org for those unable to attend in person. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Salvation Army in Velma's memory, a testament to her lifelong commitment to helping others. Contributions can be made at https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/ to the Home Stewart Family Fund, honoring her legacy of love and service. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at the Village of Victory Lakes, particularly the memory care team, for their unwavering dedication to Velma's comfort and dignity during her final days. As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of love, laughter, and immeasurable kindness. Velma Cameron Home Stewart may have left this earth, but her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her.
